View Full Version : Can't decide which Canary Island

mpet
17th November 2007, 19:00
Got deals ready to book a weeks break in February. We wanted somewhere not too far, but a bit warm. Thought the Canaries would be ideal (never been before). Now we can't decide which one. Originally though Lanzarote, then Fuerteventura.

We are not into noisy clubs/bars, but like to eat out have the odd drink and a bit of sightseeing.

Any recommendations which one is 'best'

Thanks:D

what about La palma?

We really enjoyed Fuerteventura, we stayed in Correlejo, only a small-ish beach in the town, but you could get a road train to the sand dunes where there were miles and miles to choose from. Also the other end of the island to the airport and the stronger winds are on the other coast.
Compact enough to hire a car and explore for a couple of days if you like that sort of thing, nice in the mountains. Also from Correlejo you can get the ferry over to Lanzarote - think its about 30 mins, and was quite cheap so you can explore there too.
Think most of the canaries are open all year round, but might be worth checking whats open off season - we were there first two weeks of august, and it was busy - but not heaving! So might be quiet off peak.

Maverick - La Palma looks gorgeous from the pages I've Googled - unfortunately Cosmos don't seem to go there in February

Polotoo - we were actually considering Correlejo - Sounds really nice - we were also thinking about a hire car for a few days - who did you hire from?

Haven't been to any of the canaries and they all seem nice but after hearing Fuerteventura referred to as the cockroach isle I think I've crossed it off my to do list.

Blimey, can't remember - think we booked it upon arrival through our rep - there was loads of car hire prices on the main strip though, and would imagine off season they'd all be vying for your money! I think it was probably Europcars.... We could have got it cheaper by shopping around but we went with ma and pa and they paid up at the welcome meeting!

We did a lot of miles up and down the island, and I can't remember the names of the resorts nearer the airport, but they had very strong winds, which was great for the day - and great for surfers etc, but made it difficult to lie on the beach as the sand was hitting us like bullets!!

Really? Can't recall seeing any there, and I don't remember getting as bitten as I did this year in Portugal!

Guess, as anywhere it depends where you stay, we were self catering and the apartments were spotless, as was the pool - also cheap to eat out most nights, and didn't notice anywhere being particularly dirty and no signs of cockroaches.....

We stayed at mas palomas, near the sand dunes. Plenty of places to eat/drink and fairly quiet.

All the Canary Islands have cockroaches, we only saw 2 during our holiday in Tenerife and one of those was dead.
On the plus side they don't have mosquitos, the volcanic nature of the rock means it soaks up moisture so no stagnant water to attract them.
Stayed in Los Christianos and had a very enjoyable week, in fact we wished we'd booked two weeks. There is a fabulous animal park in South Tenerife (we had a really good day out there).

Enjoy your planning.:)

LOL - just to confuse your further I'd say Lanzarote is nice, we're going for the 3rd time in Feb. Will be staying in Costa Teguise, lovely beach, shops, bars & restaurants but not overly busy or rowdy - I expect it to be quite quiet in Feb.

Been to Puerto Rico in Gran Canaria - didn't like it as much as Lanzarote, personally, it's built on steep hillside and shops/restaurants etc were centred around manmade "commercial centres" - but this was 8 yrs ago so it may've changed a bit.

I hated Gran Canaria! I found it far too touristy and commercialised.

We stayed at Playa del Ingles. The beach is very poor. It's small and gets crowded. Maspalomas is close by with better beaches and sand dunes though.

The main resort is made up of commercial centres. There are many places that cater for British and Irish tourists to eat and drink. I found there far too many places serving breakfast fry-ups and roast dinners, and I struggled to find anywhere serving traditional local dishes. There were also a lot of German restaurants and bars as it's a popular place for Germans to holiday.

Most of the bars were the usual party holiday dancing type bars where it's often happy hour. Most nights you just saw the same people bar crawling the same bars doing the same stupid drunken things.

That's not what I go on holiday for, and I didn't enjoy it very much.

My ex loves that type of holiday though and he's been a few times and enjoys it.

We have done Fuerta and Tenerife, liked both places and would go back if we didnt have sooo many other places to try out LOL, i would definetly try the other canary island i havnt been to, didnt see any cocroaches in either place.
Hope you decide now we have ALL confused you, i bet you were wishing for everyone to at least say one place was very bad or one was super duper, just to make the descision easier LOL....sorry, all i would say though is check the actual area your looking at staying in, as when we went to Tenerife we didnt realise it was a very small very quiet place, with a tiny patch of sand they called a beach LOL, so dont go to anywere thats to quiet, or like us you will be on the bus everyday to the nearest resort that has a pulse:D

I wanted to go to Costa Teguise in June, but by the time I got my deals the holiday I wanted had gone. Maybe next year, any views on the H10 Lanzarote Gardens Hotel, that was the one I fancied.

Much to mull over!! LOL I'll pull out the brochures and have another think:)

As it's just me an hubby (finally managed to give the kids the slip:D) I was going to splash out a bit (courtesy of Mr T of course). I liked the look of the Gran Hotel Lopesan Playa Meloneras - Gran Canaria - bit put off by the 'touristy' comments though.

Also quite liked the look of Gran Hotel Bahia Real Corralejo - Fuerta, (will it be warm enough in Feb) or Mediteranen Palace Playa Americas Tenerife:help:

DS wants to try the sausages cooked over the volcano. :)

Highly recommended! The trip to the volcano area is amazing - we went there in May (courtesy of Mr T and XL). We stayed in Costa Teguise, and personally I don't really rate it - it seemed to be full of cafes serving sausage, egg and chips for British tourists. But if you mainly want a beach and a base for sightseeing trips out, then it's fine. I definitely recommend hiring a car, then it's easy to get to other, less touristy towns, where you can get more authentic food.

Not been to F/tura, people always say its windy there so never gone for this reason may be wrong, but been to Tenerife Lanzarote and Gran Canaria.
We prefered Gran Canaria out of all, stayed in Porto Rico.
My second choice would be Lanzarote, wouldnt do Tenerife again.
But this is my personal choice, each to their own i say.

Been to Gran Canaria a few times- Puerto Rico, its great for a winter holiday but up the top of the resort (europa) is nicer with fantastic views.
Lanzarote - playa Blanca is nice but not alot there, but lovely beach, great for families. puerto del carmen is busier but too tacky IMO and matagorda is horrid ! boring and nasty beach. It is a windy island though.
Didnt rate Tenerife much-sorry.
Futureventura was too full of germans and nudist beaches for my liking and i found it more expensive to eat and drink etc

So i think Gran Canaria is a good all rounder. :)

Also been to mogan a few times which is a very nice picturesque villages made to look olde worlde with very nice restarants.. you can get a boat from puerto rico to mogan for a few quid
I also liked the chinese as much as you can eat for a fiver :)

what about La palma?

La Palma looks great, and is the only Canary Island that really interests me. It doesn't seem to suffer from the South Blackpool effect you get at most Canary destinations. Unfortunately, Cosmos don't seem to go there, and niether do Virgin. The Cape Verde Islands look nice too, only Thomson seem to go there.

We've been to Teneriffe about 4 times and love it verytime. Nice to stay in the south and hire a car and go to the north of the island a couple of times for a day out. Plenty of variety the Vocano is amazing and you can go right to the top of it

Have been to La Palma and it was pretty. Was only there for a day though as it was part of a cruise.

As we have younger kids, we need to have a few options of things to do that La Palma doesn't offer. Mogan doesn't seem as 'in yer face' as some of the other Canarian resorts.

We've been to Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote and always go back to Tenerife every year, Gran Canaria was okay if your not at the top of the hill at Porto Rico, Lanzarote was way too windy - gale force winds and cold at night in the apartment and the sun didn't come out till about 3/4 in the afternoon if your lucky, so we stick to Tenerife in the Torviscos area which is the quieter end and near the harbour with plenty of bars/restaurants, beach is lovely as well with a big iceberg inflatable thing for the kids in the sea (they do charge for that) but we love it there.

My parents have enjoyed Maspalomas in Gran Canaria and we liked fuertaventura although we stayed in Caleta de fuste( also known as costa caleta) and would have preferred Coralejio
My parents also liked the north of Tenerife but said its cooler there so in spring/winter it might not be so great weather wise

We all like it pretty low key but with some nice restaurants and bars for evenings out

Agree with everything Becles says here. Also, must say it was the worst hoilday I ever had and I have been on some bad ones. Cochroaches everywhere, nothing to do except go to shopping centres, apartments rubbish, food rubbish. I really don't have anything good to say about the place. Something that really bothered me is that there are no churches - I am not at all religious but this told me that no one actually lived there. And this is true - everyone lives at the other end of the island and only come for the tourists. I'm sure the other islands have something better to offer.

Just come back from Lanzarote last night which was absolutely superb....the best Canary island up to now....we like a week just chilling in the winter....this pressed all the right buttons, lovely area, weather, hotel, food, people, beach...Was not keen on Tenerife at all, all time shares and nothing else, Gran Canaria was ok (just!) haven't tried Fuerteventura yet but will most def be returning to lovely Lanzarote!
Costa del sol.... Fuengirola (if you like busy, commercialised Spain) is ok but Benalmadena is brill with the beautiful surrounding hillside villages ie Mijas....I personally love Majorca (the quieter areas) and I agree Minorca is lovely too...just love Spain full stop!!!!!!!!!:plane::plane::plane:Take me back....NOW!

I have been to three of the islands and will always go back to Tenerife, we stay at the Torvisca end (San Euenio) at the Los Geranios which is in Playa de las Americas which has some lovely restaurants and a good beach right by the harbour this is the less noisy end than being in the centre where Veronicas is, Los Cristianos is the other end of Playa and is lovely but the resturants and bars tend to be more expensive but the beach is great and they have a massive market one day aweek.

I have put a link in for the map. :)

I can second that. We stayed there in December. I've been to all of them bar Fuerteventura and thought that Lanzarote and GC were better that Tenerife. If you choose Tenerife it's more sunny in the south (wetter in the north) of the island.

I suppose it depends if you plan on cooking in the apartment or eating out. There's Spar shops selling basics in all the resorts in Lanzarote - there are not particularly cheap but cheaper than constantly buying snacks out. We had Breakfast and lunch mainly in the apt and had a dinner out in the evening - the food wasn't expensive but what really bumped up the price (for us) was the drinks - esp with 2 kids - the soft drinks were 2.50euros each - so 2 drinks each for the kids would be 10euros. For an adult I think you could have pretty much want you wanted to eat for 10euros or less - our main course were rarely more than 8euros.

Yes with hindsight keeping the kiddies in drinks and ice creams bumped up the price a lot for us.

Yes with hindsight keeping the kiddies in drinks and ice creams bumped up the price a lot for us.

Thank you loveabargain

Just booking trip to GC now, have stayed in the same hotel 3 years running (PM me for details as not got booking completed and dont want a mad rush LOL) in Playa del Ingles, gets a bad rep for nothing from what i have seen over the years, and the place we go is great vfm and for families, singles, in fact everyone.

Gran Canaria has its own microclmate so weather is generally better than other islands, and is cheaper too!

Maspalomas is fun, Puerto Mogan is great for a market on a Friday as previously quoted (make sure you get the bus yourself and dont go on organised tour operator scams, i mean trips :p )

In fact most trips can be done independently at a fraction of cost!

If you end up there can give you some good pointers..or anyone else if want some free advice just PM me

HTH :)
