My Hubby is going away for a week to Chicago in February on business. Although I don't mind (actually I am looking forward to the peace and quiet!!!), Hubby is worried about me and the girls.
He has been away overnight before, the longest he has been away in our 15 years together is 3 nights. Now we have the two girls, he sees himself as 'protector and provider' and is worrried about us being alone in the house.
I feel safe in our house, but he is so worried for us (I think that's cute!!) I sleep soundly when he's away (more room in the bed) and although I feel a huge protective urge towards the girls (I would die defending them), I'm not worried.
How you do sleep on a night time?? Cookie xxx

That is sweet, my husband is often away for a night, but I have never worried about being alone, despite having 2 little ones. I have to admit we live in such a quiet area with very little crime I have even forgotten to lock up at night. I am more careful now as my husband tells me off. Hes just to nag me a bit more to lock the car up at night!!

if my OH is away for only one night i don't tend to sleep very well as i tend to listen for noises etc, but if hes away more than one night, i sleep absolutely fine, ear plugs in and i'm out like a light. I get to do star fish in bed to - loads more room!!! I do check under the bed and in the wardrobes for bogie men and also doubley make sure i've locked all the doors (bit of a monica i'm afraid)!!!

I am only adult in the house & always sleep well. The RSPCA are desperate for foster homes at the moment but only to people without animals. Maybe if that applys to you cookie you could put your name forward for a dog that week & that might reassure hubby. Or maybe borrow a dog off a friend .

My hubbies has been away over the years the longest being 3 weeks and that is when you start to miss them. One week is fine the house stays tidy - you can lounge in the bath with a glass of wine you dont have to cook if you dont want to you enjoy but them you start to wish them back.
the only thing I do when he is away is take my mobile to bed. When the kiddies were little I used to have one of them in bed with me (they used to enjoy that and do alternative nights) but my thoughts were if there was a fire or something happened I would only have to go and find one child. Bit silly but nothing ever happened

My hubby used to be away for a week sometimes when we has working as an instructor for the Cadets. The last time was when I was 8 months pregnant with my son (who is now 3 years old). I did feel safe as long as when I went to bed I double checked the doors were locked. We also live in a quiet estate and I was never worried. He now works early mornings and leaves the house at 3 in the morning so I am on my own from then. I do still feel safe, I guess because it is already morning! I think it helps to take your mobile/house phone to bed - just in case ! (those bogey men could still be lurking isn't that right Colman!?)

My DH works nights some weeks so i am quite often here withthe kids on my own. I find if i lock the doors when he goes, then double check them before he goes (and i won't have any windows open) i am fine and sleep like a log. I'm sure you'll be fine xxx

Its OK colman, I don't know where you live :D
When I have been away overnight the OH says she doesn't sleep that well, but she says she can't sleep till I come in on lates, a claim somewhat at odds to my experience of her snoring when I get home.....
She's hardly ever been away overnight but when she is I love it, especially when I am not working the next day - can stay up till 1am or later and no huffs and puffs that I get usually if I am up after 10pm  I sleep soundly, better on my own tbh! Sorry if that sounds mean!

I don't sleep very well when OH works nights
It all stems from when I was about 6 years old and dad worked in the local power station, I was cuddled up to mum in bed and she woke up in the middle of the night, hearing noises, she told me to stay upstairs and she investigated. We had a burglar half in and half out of the kitchen window and when she turned the lights on he legged it - turned out 4 houses had been burgled that night.
Now Mr Welshy works nights too and I don't sleep well - what I do now is I set aside tonight and tomorrow as my PTS/MSE nights and spend more time on the internet so when i do go asleep I am shattered although I still listen out for noises.
Behind the bedroom door I have a baseball bat just in case although I'd probably be too frightened to use it !

Welshy, that must have been so frightening for you and your Mum. I don't have anything in the bedroom, I have always wanted pepper spray, but I know that it's illegal in this country. (Like you I don't think I could beat an intruder ovwer the head with a bat............... but i would use pepper spray.

I'm not worried at all, but Hubby worries about me and the girls! Little does he know I am looking forward to the peace and quiet once the girls are in bed!! I can also watch watch ever I want on TV, and I can be in charge of the remote control for once! Le'ts not forget I can spread out in bed.....Yipeeeee!!

well I am on my own with three kids and before that my ex worked nights so I am used to it.
When I was younger and my oldest was only 6 months old his dad was working away. I had gone to bed but thought I heard a knock at the door so i went to have a look but was hesitant and a bit unsure as it was late. No one there so thought I was just hearing things then when I got back to my room I heard a smash in my DSs room (we lived in a flat) and turned the light on and opened the door a lad was half way in! He soon scarpered though but I was left with a broken window and no house phone! Wasnt very nice experience and I must have had a premonition as only that day I had moved his cot from the window to the other side of the room. WOuldnt like to think what could have happened.
Being on my own doesnt bother me but sometimes when I hear a noise I get worried but still come down and check but I make sure I put every single light on upstairs so they know someone is home!! I enjoy not having to tidy up and do things when I want to do them etc.

Pammy, that's terrible........... am glad that you were all okay. I love a good horror film, but won't watch them on my own, I get too scared (I need Hubby to cuddle into for the scary bits)

My hubby does shift work, and I loathe his nights on (4 nights on, 4 nights off) I sleep terribly when he isn't here.
I don't particularly feel safe here when he isn't around to be honest, although I've got no cause not to. We live in a purpose built flat, and have entry system, then a porch door, then our front door, but I still hate it.
I do like Welshy, and stay on the net for far too long in hope that I'll just crash out on the bed.

I feel fairly safe as I have two BIG dogs but I always double check all the doors are locked properly and I don't feel safe leaving bedroom windows open in the summer even though I would prefer the cool air. :(

I'm with Welshy & Charlene on this one :(
Mr Patty works shifts on rotation ...currently days, nights & afternoons......and even though we've been together nearly 8 years, i still can't sleep when he's on nights.
And it's going to get worse......
Next month he starts on *continentals*.......that's 12 hour shifts, days & nights......so many on, so many off (it's a weird shift pattern specifically developed for their workplace)
Am stressed about it already

I loathe being on my own at night. I hear every creak, rattle and squeek that the house makes, I think that I would hear a spider running across the floor!
I lock the doors as soon as he goes and I have 999 on one key dial on my mobile which I then sleep with, I also sleep with a golf club!!!
I then spread random things around the front and back doors so if anyone breaks in they are going to make a hell of a lot of noise getting to me!
All this and I have two dogs in the house so should be at ease!

When I first moved in with oh 17 years ago [almost to the day!] he worked nights and I hated it. I had my step-d in the house too, but wasn't used to being in a house "alone" overnight and heard every sound.
Now if hes away for a night or 2, I can watch a dvd instead of having something boring burbling away on TV in the background, I can enjoy a bottle of wine in peace, sit at the pc for as long/as late as I want without worrying about disturbing him when I go up... and I get the bed to myself - no snoring and more space.. bliss! :)

Thats really worrying Tyrole.. and how awful for your neighbours to know they were in the house while they slept. I don't think I would sleep at all tonight knowing that. xx

That's not nice. Hope there was no more activity last night. Perhaps that's your street done and they'll go somewhere else now (probably my street!)? I wonder what kind of security your neighbours had - we have double glazing and decent doors but I'm fully aware anyone can get into anywhere if they really want to.

This happenend to one of my neighbours. She was in the back garden and they went in the front door. Broke a window to get in. We live on quite a busy road!!! I am so grateful that I have my dog. He sounds so ferocious(sp).
The police reckoned it was kids doing it for a buzzz. Apparently they are well known and come from affluent families.

I am so sorry Tyrole. I can imagine how scary that must be for you!! I wouldn't tell DD, I don't see the point in her being worried too, hopefully the bad people have moved off somewhere else.
Sending you lots of love Cookie xxx
