Watching the breakfast programme this morning, there was an item about Ghurkas not being allowed British citizenship.
It seems unfair to me that someone who has proved their loyalty to Britain is not allowed in when we sometimes allow in people who have no connection to this country.

I found that a petition was sent to Downing Street last year and this is the Government response to it: response to petition (http://www.number-10.gov.uk/output/Page11023.asp)

It must save money by paying them a pension which gives a good living in Nepal. They would probably have to pay many times that if they were living here.

Don't get me started on this one...this is truly disgusting.....as a country we seem to let just about anybody in and then we suddenly go all political and say no to the Ghurkas....it is times like this that I am ashamed to be British.

At Christmas I did several shoeboxes for the Save our Soldiers appeal....the thankyou letter I received from the Ghurkas was by far one of the best I have ever read.....it oozed gratitude and every member had signed it and sent private little messages to me.

These people put the life on the line for our Queen and Country the least we can do is offer them respite in their old age.

Sorry rant over.

Ghurkas should not have to fight for the right to be British citizens, it should be given to them automatically when they join their regiment..

It is a subject that also makes my blood boil. as sullieb says, we let just about anyone into this country and bend over backwards to give them everything. Then these loyal men are denied. I have just seen on TV that they are giving back their medals. Can you imagine how proud they must have been to get these, so they must be desperate to do this. I so hope the government changes its mind.

This is a "soap box subject" in our house too.

Its absolutely disgusting that the British Government can't give The Ghurkas citizenship, when we're all aware the crime rates are falling in some countries cos their criminals have moved over here!

I agree too. People aren't awarded medals for nothing - they are recognition of their bravery and loyalty. The Ghurkas have always been greatly respected and it is unbelievable that this country should now treat them in this way instead of showing appreciation. :(
