I heard part of a report on the radio this morning, regarding a law firm representing people who had been affected by British Companies dumping toxic waste overseas. I've just been searching for it as I didn't have time to listen properly to it. I couldn't find this morning's item, but the results are shocking.

A London-based multinational commodities company is facing a £100m claim for compensation over allegations that it arranged to dump 400 tons of toxic waste in Ivory Coast, causing the deaths of 10 people and injuring up to 100,000.

Hermaphrodite Arctic polar bears who are being poisoned by chemical compounds commonly used in Europe and North America to reduce the flammability of household furnishings like sofas, clothing and carpets.

British Mining Companies who allow toxic waste to pollute rivers and streams in Ghana, Peru, India and Bangladesh, turning many of them into unusable dead rivers of bright orange-coloured toxic sludge.

Quote from The Guardian, 18th October, 2006

"British governments always prioritise corporate interests in their foreign policies, but this has reached new depths under New Labour. The government has even intervened in the US legal process to stop British companies being sued in the US for human rights violations committed overseas. And it has helped legitimise the role of corporations in international development, for example by championing the Business Action for Africa network, one of whose founding sponsors is none other than Anglo-American."

Thats terrible - I just dont understand how someone could make the decision to dump toxic waste like that - I just cant understand the thought pattern and mind set behind it - makes me sick. I dont think there is place for people like that in the world.
