If you are a knitter and have any odd balls of wool then here is a good use for them.

About half of all babies born in South Africa suffer from hypothermia during their first week of life. So they’re much more likely to catch pneumonia.

aww great post Tiger!

I read... dont make them in white... and wondered why.. the link took me to the answer....

"Colour – please don’t knit an all-white hat, because white symbolises death in a number of cultures in Africa and Asia."

They even suggest a pattern & it looks easy enough

it even comes with a learn to knit guide! (http://www.savethechildren.org.uk/en/docs/knit-kit.pdf)

Giz... no reason why you couldnt crochet.. if you look on the pdf theres one there that looks crochet'd.. or is that crocheted?

Also says "Pattern – any infant pattern is fine, so long as it’s a suitable size and will keep the baby’s head" warm. Or you could use the pattern below. which is 5" long from cast on edge.

Seems like a good way to use up any odd bits.. Ive not knit for a while... where are my needles...

Pix of finished hats please! I may even have some wool here I can post out Giz and I have dozens of baby patterns, there may well be some crochet ones ....

edit ah well done Tiger.. great post!

Never attempting to knit a hat before, squares and scarves have usually been my limit but I'll give it a whirl! :)

:o what do you think folks? Sorry for the rubbish photos

The little red one and the one next to it are in a mock cable, they stretch loads but look smaller cos of the pattern, I was thinking it might make them warmer?

the yellow one was the first attempt, they prefer bright colours apparently

and then I started on the stripes :D

Only take a couple of hours to make... I'd love to add pompoms or flowers... or just send them the way they are??

Apparently its really cold there now as its their winter, but as of 6 June 2008 they are now two months into the campaign and so far have received 120,000 woolly hats!

:o thank you all for your kind words

Ive not knit for a couple of years.. though I used to design make and sell my own knitwear, but the cause inspired me. They were made within a day or so while watching telly and I spent last night sewing them up, so it took me a while to get started

this is the pattern used to make the mock cable (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/patterns/babymockcablehat.htm) design

molly, they're lovely - and thanks for the reminder.

I meant to start knitting when I first read the thread but then got sidetracked as you do. am going to sort my wool box out and start tonight - good excuse for a sit in front of the telly lol.

Hiya and absolutely right there Andylaine, it took me a week to get round to it and then I dug me needles out, blew the dust of em, lol and sat and watched the hour long eastenders and caught up with the other soaps :o and they whizzed along!

The given pattern is really easy too, lets do this gals and see how many we can make within the next 2 weeks?

My gran used to knit these for the babies born prematurely (sp!) in our local maternity ward as they need to keep their heads warm too.
