My oh had an opticians appointment this week which is first for many many years. They are getting the doc to refer him to hospital as he has a dark brown spot on temporal neuroretinal rim of optic disc.
Can anyone shed light on what this means and could be? Tried searching but cant find anything.

Could be something linked to diabetes

Obviously you are worried Sandi, but I would hopefully think they would have rushed an appointment through if they thought it was anything very sinister. it does tell us all though to go for our eye appointments because they can pick up on lots of things that are wrong throughout our body. I hope it all turns out ok for your OH and it proves to be somethings easily cleared up.

Not sure if this is relevant, but years ago I was referred to the hospital by the optician (via GP) and that was for a 'spot' that the optician could see behind my eye. After an awful lot of tests, they concluded that it was a mis-shaped blood vessel and nothing to worry about. I had loads of people looking into my eyes with various machines, and even a brain scan, but think this was also because I have recurrent head-aches so they were double-checking.

Hope your OH's condition is similarly harmless.

Sandi, has he got any symptons at all, I was referred by an optician to hospital on a non urgent basis, I went to the doctor because I wasn't happy and he said to go to the hospital that day as he thought it was urgent. Went that day and had the test where they put the drops in your pupil which showed a spot on the retina. Had a fluroscenangiogram 2 days later as an emergency and fortunately showed the spot was only fluid not a broken blood vessel. However I was seen by the consultant regularly and if it had been a blood vessel they possibly would have lasered it and even the with just fluid lasering was a possibility and the consultant said the sooner the better with your eye.
So to sum up I suggest you go to your doctor and have a chat with him and see what he says. Did they do the test with your OH where they put the drops in to dilate the pupils so they can see the retina behind, this is the test where they can really see what is going on, if your oh had this done then the optician will have had a good luck with what is going on behind the eye if not then I would be straight to the doctors. I was told when I first visited the hospital that losing the sight in that eye was a possibility once they saw behind my pupils, this was after the optician had give me a non urgent appointment!!
Sorry to ramble on a bit, and hopefully it will be nothing.

I tried to find out more as we were given letter to take to doc as quicker then posting, was just told we'll hear via letter from hospital...

Hi,
this sounds similar to what my dads optician found years ago.
it was Glaucoma caused by Diabetes(pre-existing).
I also had a shadowshow up an an eye test a few years ago but my pressure tests were normal and on a repeat test a month later it had gone.
They said it was probably a burst blood vessel.
Don't worry too much as these thing are easily treatable if spotted early.

Hi,
I have a family history of glaucoma and was told that I must have regular eye tests (over the age of 40).
I was referred by my optician a few months ago (as the pressure readings were higher than normal )to the hospital and after extensive tests they are happy with everything..... the optician was just being extra careful because of my family history. Hopefully it is something similar with your oh.

Just wondering if your oh is over 40?

As someone else said earlier, they really can treat a lot of eye problems without too much bother if they are caught early enough.

temporal neuroretinal rim of optic disc .. thought that as well it had something to do with glacoma or diabetes ..something about decreased blood flow
my dads side of the family had glacoma (sp) and my aunt got referred through optitions had went for tests at hospital and had mentioned something similar ...she just has regular check ups now

hope he get's appointment soon
