i sold and item on the 14th august and buyer paid by e-cheque ...i sent them email saying items wouldn't be posted out until it cleared and according to paypal expected date was today (had a few echeques recently taking up to 15 days )

....just noticed when i checked ebay and paypal ...that buyer had cancelled payment ....have emailed them but it got returned failed ..i have also sent another invoice with the same message

just makes me think of what could have happened if i had sent the goods instead of waiting for echeque to clear ...no goods and no payment ..

has this happend to anyone else ?

yes, but are you sure it was they buyer cancelling, have had a few instances of it being cancelled by paypal for no reason, so unless you are sure it was the customer hold off a bit till you get a response, e-checques are so rubbish and a real pain to sellers, I don't even really understand what they are or how they work, good luck!

I would still start the unaid item console thingy. That takes 7 days to run its course and usually when I start one of these I get a response on the same day, payment usually.

E-cheques work same way as a normal bank cheque - payment is not guaranteed until officially cleared.

Most likely explanation is the buyer didn't have funds in their account to make the payment so lucky you had complied and not sent the goods :)
Never send anything out paid for by E-Cheque until it shows as Cleared in your PayPal account.

As Mhoc said, start an Unpaid Item Dispute now as you are past the required 7 days wait for payment.
I would say it is unlikely your buyer will pay if the E-Cheque didn't go through ;)

I've had this as well, buyers cancelling the payment the day before it was supposed to have cleared, and have never sent out any items until the payment has cleared.

NEVER SEND ANY ITEM UNTIL ECHEQUE CLEARED!!! make it clear when you send invoice and keep the buyer updated as to when and if echeque has cleared. if the echeque doesnt clear advise the buyer that you will start an unpaid dispute unless you hear from them in the meantime. It once took 14 days for an echeque to clear but kept the buyer informed and had good feedback but that is the only time i have had dealings with echeques

I bought a cd for DS last wkend and paid via paypal with bank not echeque and got an email yesterday saying the bank had declined it so i got onto the phone and the bank said they hadnt declined it paypal had gggrrr the bank said it could be that my card has 20 digits across the strip and most cards normally have 16 thats why they might have thrown it out i dont normally pay by bank its normally credit card.Really annoyed with paypal atm as theyve taken my bank card now off my profile so when i want to transfer my lightspeed points that ive been saving up for the last year or so nearer xmas i cant grrrrrrr:(:(

Thanks for your replies ...buyer eventually emailed me two days later complaining about bank charges and never dealing with this echeque business again ....... turns out she did cancel because he money wasnt going to be in the bank in time .. she had bought 12 other items the same day and only 4 went through as straight payment ...said she will pay by postal order
