I sold a set of dining chairs a few weeks ago for collection only.

The buyer hasn't been able to collect or arrange collection so as I need the space I said I would refund her payment and relist the chairs.

I have gone to the original transaction and clicked on Issue refund, I then confirm the amount to refund and click confirm. It then takes me to the next step to review and process refund at the top of the page it says

Your refund must not exceed your available balance. If you have funds in another currency balance, you may want to consider transferring funds from other currency balances

then at the bottom of the page it says

Note: If your PayPal account balance doesn't have enough money in it to cover this refund, money will be automatically transferred from your backup funding source.

The only options to click on are either Cancel or Edit there is no button to Issue the refund.

Now as my Paypal balance is Zero I expected that the refund would be debited from the card i normally use for payment so why isnt it doing this????

ts really doing my head in, I was meant to start doing the gardens (or jungles) over an hour ago.

Thanks

Thanks for replying.

I thought the same as you but after it says it will be taken from the backup funding source the only 2 choices to click are Edit or Cancel.

Cancelling just cancels the refund page and Edit takes you back to the screen before so you can amend the amount of the refund.

There is no other 'button' to click to go to process the refund or go to the next stage.

no its a real problem wiht Paypal, I currently have a customer getting nasty becasue I can't refund something RM lost inthe mail for 9 days -the time it takes to get money from your bank into Paypal. You can send money but you can't issue a refund unfortunatley

It is a long while since I had to issue a refund when I had a zero PayPal balance, but I uploaded funds from my bank account.

I amy be wrong and happy to be corrected, but I don't think refunds can be issued by taking money from your credit or debit card.

To add money to your PayPal account, go to your My Account page.
Top left of screen under My Account you will see the Add Funds option, click there.
This will allow you to move money from your bank account into your PayPal account. It does take 7-9 days so worth explaining to your buyer that it will take this long.

Once the money arrives in your PayPal account, issue the refund from the original transaction page so you will be refunded the PayPal fees charged when you received the money.

Paypal is PANTS

If I cant issue a refund with a zero balance why doesn't it just say so intstead of saying it would come from my backup funding source blah blah blah.

The problem I have now is my bank account isnt set up on Paypal (I am more of a buyer than a seller and any positive balance is used up buying) and Paypal says it has to do test amounts and I have to input the amounts to prove its my bank account before I can send money back to do the refund.

i had the same problem recently. apart from waiting the 7-9 days for bank funds to transfer, you could get a friend to send you a gift payment, which wont cost either of you any money if not using a credit /debit card. issue the refund and then send the money bk to yr friend, but cos you dont have yr bank account on file, it may charge you.

The test amounts come through quickly and if you have online banking, you can check for the info which is sent on your statement.

It is worth having your bank account linked to PayPal just so you have the convenience of being able to upload funds should you ever need to.

Emma's suggestion is great, likely to be a far quicker way of sorting the refund faster if you have a friend or family member able to help you.
