Is anyone else planning on applying for the Playtex Moonwalk in London on May 16th 2009???:)
A few of us where I work sent emails of interest a few months ago and I've received my email from the charity today telling me the start date for online and paper applications.
Would be good to know if anyone else will apply or is interested.....
Not sure if some of those from work will do it or not....maybe we could start a PTS meet up at the event....
Bras at the ready!!!:D

:(Sorry for your losses Floosy....
My mum had breast cancer at 42 and had a mastectomy(sp), its something I worry about alot as I've just turned 40 and my two DS's are very young....
Will be a brilliant cause for us to all support and a great opportunity to get fitter too.

ange01
10th October 2008, 12:36
I think New Balance trainers are good...I think they reccommend some on the walkthe walk site too..
I've had NB for a while an have always liked them... HTH:)
Freebird
10th October 2008, 12:39
Right......to get a chance of walking together, we all need to put the same estimated finishing time to be in the same starting groups. Also, are we doing half or full marathons?
If there are no Travelodge deals going (£10 sounds brilliant), I can put 5/6 of you up at my place. Won't be anything flash - camping style on airbeds or huuuuge sofa. I can guarantee SW food though :)
What is NB?
ange01
10th October 2008, 12:43
I want to try the full marathon !!
NB is New Balance trainers.
ange01
10th October 2008, 12:53
Will put down 8+ hours plus on the advice of the people of the walkthewalk office...
they suggest the slowest time slot if you have not tried it before and its a way of making sure we all get to start together too.
They set you a training schedule that increases your walking upto the event.
Am sooo excited!! PLease please let us all get accepted - apparently 70% of all walkers each year are new to it!!

I'll go for the full marathon too - in for a penny, in for a pound. It's going to need some serious training though. We could also get together a few weeks before the event for a "rehearsal" walk/training weekend. I did that with one of my treks and it was a brilliant test to see how I was doing.....and the evening drinkies were fun too :D

Staying calm nicely...cough, cough.....BUT....
Start by doing minimum 1 mile a session several times a week and then build it up. You should be walking 1 mile in roughly 15 mins, but to give yourself a proper idea of distance, DRIVE a circular route and then you know that whatever you've walked is X miles. Set a rough time guide and once you find that easy, add another mile and so on. Get some decent walking shoes and aim to wear them every time - new ones close to the event that haven't been properly worn in just guarantee major blisters and pain.
:D

when i did the edinburgh moonwalk earlier this year (26m) the steepest hills came in the first 3 miles. mistake myself and friend made was trying to maintain too fast a pace at this stage rather than drop back. also didnt factor in the effect the cold of the night would have on our muscles compared to a 20mile practice walk on a warm day. did finish though. good luck to all contemplating taking part in moonwalk.

Kedger - check out the walkthewalk website and see the range of people that walk this amazing event every year, we're none of us slinkymalinky's yet.(check out the weight loss thread:D)
We will all walk together at the pace of the slowest - team PTS will be such an ace group!!!
Please think about downloading the application fomthe website on the 22nd Oct - alot of my friends who were abit slow inthe week are applying, some are doing the half moon walk too - so there is always that option for you.
Otherwse you will always be welcome as our 'backup crew' (those going to Freebirds for a knees up afterwards but not able to walk).
Freebird
18th October 2008, 16:16
Hurrah to the pace bit - we'll all march over that finishing line together!!!
Kedger - it'll be fab whatever you decide to do.....but think of it this way....I'm a bit rubbish at doing exercise and have a lot of weight to lose too - the thought of the walk is going to get me out there doing something which can only be good for my health and losing in the long-term, as well as doing something for a great cause). It'll be as much motivation as the dreaded wi every week. And imagine what a massive boost it'll be for your confidence when you not only do a marathon, but see you've lost a load of weight training for it! We're all in this together and noone will be left behind!
What are we going to call our team, anyway? Something clean so it can go on our justgiving pages (if we do them) and so I can mention it when I attack my ex-colleagues for sponsorship! Can't be Team PTS though as it's not an official team. Don't want to get slapped by a mod! :D

It does indeed :) Have always been a bit of a restless spirit and spent years travelling around the world - the words of that song really "spoke" to me - along with Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again", but that's not so easy to use for a forum ID! :D

Just a lil training tip to ensure you are covering the distance required for training... When you use google map, you can change the journey from car to walking; This will give you a measured distance and estimated time which it can be done in. On the training plan it does say we should aim to complete a mile in 18-20 minutes. I am starting the shedule on Sunday with the required 3 mile walk, however I am going to punish my children and make them do it as well (after todays behaviour it will serve them right)... This means it will possibly take me a while longer but my route is planned for marching along a good section of our seafront. Remember safety is paramount when walking alone, so any of you girls out there doing this with me - Please take someone with you or plan your training during daylight hours, failing that you can borrow my children they are enough to scare anyone.
Freebird
10th February 2009, 18:12
Another great site to plan routes AND see how far they are is this website. It's US based, but you can change it to the UK - I use it all the time for plotting training routes.

Well girls you have a 3 mile walk to complete today and by way of example, kids donned there roller skates and my mother came with me and we marched along the seafront. I measured a 3 mile distance on google and as per training shedule (even with brats in tow - with moans of *ooo my back ache - ooo my hip aches - mum can we stop*) we managed to do as the training shedule says and complete an 18-20minute per mile walk. Good luck people want to hear good things from you lol xx Throughly enjoyed it today xx

Floosy, your doing brilliant with the walks, I've been rubbish. Am out at the weekend lots tho, not being able to stick to their schedule at the moment.
Have got a load from work to sponsor me and with the ones online am getting there!!
Even asked a solicitor at the station yesterday and he coughed up £20!! LOL

Thanks Ange xx Well the rain god held out and I walked to my sisters... She lives 2.5 miles from me and the other half a mile I have walked off here there and everywhere today. I seem to be able to hold a 17-18 minute mile well now, so thats good x If I only raise £100 then so be it but every penny counts towards this cause.

This is a bit pricey but brilliant Floosy, uses GPS so much more accurate than a pedometer. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GARMIN-FORERUNNER-101-GPS-PERSONAL-TRAINER-ATHLETES-NEW_W0QQitemZ390030094681QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGPS_De vices?hash=item390030094681&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1690%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318

Im in here with kind of an acheivement lol... Well I power walked today and managed the first 2.5 miles in 14 minutes and 40 seconds per mile (36 minutes), then the next 2.5miles in pain but still acheived a respectable 16 minutes per mile for the remainder... Im off to Tesco to get some pain relief after Ive had a cuppa lmao. I am not looking forward to Sunday as its 10 mile walk

well done with your training walks floosy. i used to take the pain relief before setting out on the longer training walks just to get it in my system. then top up later. im not advocating the abuse/overuse of painkillers though.

Well done to you all who are doing the Moonwalk this year. I did it in 2006, so glad I decided to do it then as by the following year I was using a walking stick (and am going to get no better than I am today).
I only did the half moonwalk but the sense of elation of passing the finish line (in under 3 hours!) is something that I will never forget and am eternally grateful to my sister-in-law for the encouragement she gave me during the last mile (I'd never have got it finished without her!)

well done you... i hope the fact you are using a stick isn't because of the 'moonwalk'!
