A good site for you to giveaway some old things (found it when researching for the stamp thread!).
Intelligent Giving (http://www.intelligentgiving.com)
Tells you where you can donate the following items all to help various charities
Mobile phones
Bikes
Coins & stamps
Computers
Printer empties (laser and inkjet)
Specs
Other
Lots of the printer empties ones accept cartridges that Tesco wont and for that of you that wok in an office and usually ditch the laser cartridges please dont - most companies offer FREEPOST labels in order to recycle them
Together we can all make a difference - it only takes a few seconds and helps someone else.

For larger items, like furniture check with your local council for the name of any charity that will collect it to resell.

We have a British Heart Foundation near us that takes furniture - they even come and pick it up! Great little place to pick up an emergency replacement really quick :)

It's surprising what people give away. You can get some great furniture bargains.
Another one that collects, is Emmaus. There are only about a dozen in the country, but if there happens to be one near you, it's worth a visit.
The first one in this country was the one just outside Cambridge. I've heard that it's brilliant. Serves fantastic home-made cakes in the coffee shop.
Have a look here to see if there is one near you.

My local council run a furniture recycling scheme - they will come and collect any unwanted furniture and then sell it very cheaply - they now have so much furniture they have had to open a shop in the city centre - well worth checking with your council if they run the same sort of scheme.
We also have an Emmaus - but must confess - always use the council when I have furniture to give away.
Regarding normal everyday things I donate to charity - my local BHF shop will collect from you if you have enough bags - I just phone them up and they arrange a date. Again worth checking with local shops as, on both occasions, I phoned up to enquire - these things aren't always publicised
