View Full Version : Support our Soldiers - an idea for spare H&B this Christmas
Gizmos
29th September 2007, 19:54
well you've been to Tesco's you've bought zillions of H&B and need to get rid of them - you want to do something useful but are stuck. You can't put the items into the Kids Shoeboxes so how about this instead
http://supportoursoldiers.co.uk/yellowrib.html
have no connection with this at all but thought it might be another idea

What a good idea.
Never heard of this organisation before but looks good and they are looking for healthcare as well...can never find what to do with these.

I wonder if we could have this as a 'pledge' thread. See how many parcels we could send between us?

good idea - stick a PTS logo on the bottom
I've already got 6 full boxes for the children then bits and pieces (toothpaste etc) to make up 10 more (childrens nice toothbrushes are 19p at the moment!)

Toiletries – Toothpaste, Toothbrushes, Shampoo, Conditioner, Shower Gel, Roll on Deodorant, Razors, Shaving Gel, Talcum Powder, Foot Powder, Cotton Buds, Wet/Moist Wipes, Tissues, Lip Salve, Travel Wash, Sanitary Protection
Pharmacy – Imodium, Rennie, Paracetamol, Plasters, Insect Repellant, Sun Screen
all of the above can be got from Tesco with H&B; SB and Quit Packs - the shaving stuff for Gillette Fusion is half price and everything else I think has offers
Please also remember that there are some ladies out there as well hence the call for sanitary items

This is a great idea, have been collecting for the kiddies but would love to support the troops!
Do you think that the only collection points are going to be in the limited areas of the Representatives? I could fill quite a few boxes but can't really afford the postage?
Gizmos
29th September 2007, 21:18
not sure - was wondering if there were a lot of PTS'ers in an area if the TA would be able to collect - might be worth dropping them an email or something - will try and have a look as well but am juggling quite a lot at the moment

OK this is the reply I got from one of the Representatives-
"I Have passed your email on to *** we have new Area CoOrdinators signed so she will pass your details on to your nearset CoOrdinator if not I Will help you as best as I Can ...As for Postage its Free the weight has to be no more than 2kg per Parcel .You do however need Name / Service No ....Unit & Address to be able to send the Parcels if not thats where the CoOrdinator will be able to help ..Thanks for your support Im sure *** will contact soon if not give me a shout again."
So it looks like we may be able to send the boxes to actual people, thus getting the postage free. I am guessing that the Representatives could give us some names, address etc.
I am waiting to hear from the other person and I will let you know the outcome.
Maybe we can get a list between us and then just split it up.
Will keep you informed!

OK chaps, here goes;
I have received a reply to my email and unfortunately there are no Representatives in my area and they cannot give out names etc to send the parcels out direct. However, the nice lady in the email said that they would be so grateful for any made up boxes and that I should email her when I have them ready to arrange perhaps a mutual meeting place. My nearest one is quite a way away so this is what I propose.
If anyone really wants to get involved with this then I will do a far bit of the leg work and will happily meet up in certain Tesco (safe place for both of us) and collect the shoeboxes from you and then deliver them to a Representative.
I will spend three days at the beginning of November visiting the following Tesco if anyone is interested.
In alphabetical order;
Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire
Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire
Heanor, Derbyshire
Hucknall, Nottinghamshire
Ilkeston, Derbyshire
Leicester Bradgate Mall, Leicestershire
Leicester Hamilton, Leicestershire
Lichfield, Staffordshire
Long Eaton, Nottinghamshire
Loughborough, Leicestershire
New Oscott, Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands
Nottingham Carlton, Nottinghamshire
Nottingham Top Valley, Nottinghamshire
Redditch, Worcestershire
Solihull, West Midlands
Toton, Nottinghamshire
Worcester St Peters, Worcestershire
Worcester Warndon, Worcestershire
Please let me know if anyone is interested in taking part in this?
Thankyou
P.S Can I just say that I know absolutely no-one in the forces and anyone that knows anyone in the forces. I just feel that I have saved so much this year by being apart of PTS that it's time to give a little back!

Hi Amanda, thankyou so much for your email, it is great to have contact with people who support our troops, I am at the moment in the process of arranging drop of points which I hope to have in place within the next few weeks, although most of them will be in Norwich, I will look into seeing if I can arrange something for the great Yarmouth area, if no-one else already has done and if they have will let you know. I will be on holiday for the next week but will contact you as soon as I return.

What a lovely thread......My husband is in Royal Navy and is due to go out to Afahanistan next year...loads of our friends (as we live on married quarters) are either in Iraq or Afghanistan at the moment and both are really soul destroying places...the temperature is roasting and the sand is like fine dust that gets everywhere and makes life grotty. And thats not to mention being shot at or having missiles aimed at you! This is a lovely thought as many of our lads and girls feel generally public have forgotten about them (lets face it , not a popular decision to go was it?). My brother is also out in middle east somewhere and i know h+b stuff can be really expensive. Count me in...Ill send a box to anyone! (by the way ...choccy melts!)

Junglie, any hints or tips about what is good/bad to send in these boxes would be appreciated.
don't send chocolate as it will melt very quickly send sweeties instead.
I would put a little card in with a message of support as many troops really do feel their country men are not supporting them and it does effect moral (my cuz had verbal abuse to do with the politics of the war the day of my nans funeral as he was in full army dress for the service, which makes me feel sick to be honest)
pack of cards
chewing gum
chapstick (gets very hot over their and their lips can suffer)
sun cream (if you were one of the lucky ones to get it for practically nothing;))
wet wipes (handy for quick clean up)
roll on deo
soap
dont forget we have lady soldiers too so you could make a female box with some nice moisturiser, maybe bit of make-up like waterproof mascara, deff face wipes for these, hmm leave in conditioner (i know what the heat does to my hair)

We encourage individuals, groups and associations to join with us and make up their own parcels or collect parcel fillers. Every single item donated really does make a difference be it a packet of shortbread or a balloon!
We know there are always many good causes to consider, and Christmas is an expensive time in itself, so we feel it’s fairer to ask lots of people to contribute a little rather than a few contributing a lot!

All parcels are checked before forwarding on to ensure that they do not contain any prohibited items. Please bear this in mind when packaging up.

If people are unable to get to a collection point, would anybody consider sending a parcel to the RAF in Cyprus??? I have emailed a friend who is out there at the moment and some of his friends would love to receive boxes, he is going to ask around and get me some addresses. So if anybody would like to send a box could you please pm me so I know how many peoples names to ask for.
I know these people are not on the front line but they still do a great job and are away from home over xmas. I know some of his freinds are due to go to the Falklands just b4 xmas so this would give them stuff to take with them.
I can then pm people their address and you can send it from the post office, which I believe is free as long as the guidlines on weight/ dimensions are correct.

I know a few of you want to support our soldiers but can't get to a collection point. My local evening paper had this in tonight:
"A call has gone out for Christmas Gift boxes for Yorkshire Regiment troops in Afghanistan.
Items such as paperback books, playing cards, writing paper, disposable razors, pens toothbrushes, sweets can all come in handy.
Send the shoe box post free, max weight 2kg to:
Shoe Box Appeal, RAOWO, 2 Yorks Battle Group, Op Herrick 7, BFPO 792"

Just wanted to highlight how well they've done, got nearly 9000 parcels this year compared to 2500 last year. That is amazing!
Im hoping that from publicity on here and MSE this has helped towards this huge (not quite final) total. (And of course thanks to mr T for giving us all the free toiletries to add to these;))
Juat want to say a big big big thank you to anyone who managed to do one! I know they'll appreciate it out there!

I just wanted to share these letters that I received from my Local SOS Organiser. Kind of brings things home a bit!
"Just a short note to say a big, big thank you, to you and the staff at SOS Nottingham, for all your hard work and generosity wth the Christmas boxes which we are starting to receive here.
Its is a huge boost to get mail here, to get a box full of goodies is even better. Opening it and sorting through everything was wonderful, almost like getting your own personal little piece of England in a box. Many thanks again, it will make being away at Christmas just that little bit more bearable.
I’m attached to ******** in *********. This is my 3rd tour in this country, and I’m afraid to say this one has been the hardest so far. Lift isn’t so good – but no complaining. Living in a tent in the desert does have its merits. There is no heating bill to worry about!
Christmas Day will be another working day out here. I don’t think the ****** will allow us to relax much. If its not them, it’s the scorpions and camel spiders always on hand to give you a quick nip in the wrong place!
Thank you again for you efforts. If there is anyone else who wants to drop a line, all mail is happily received.
Have a great Christmas, raise a glass for us here.
All the Best"
and this one;
"Many many thanks for your very kind thoughts and gifts they were well received by the lads.
The troops really “lit up” when the parcels were handed out and several were visibly moved. Showing the troops do have a human side. To see big tough squaddies showing each other their gifts was a side to the guys I had not seen before.
Please pass on our warmest thanks to your fellow team members, they really have made a difference for all the guys out here at a difficult time of year for many.
It is good to know that there are still people who car for the troops.
Once again, thank you from me, to you all.
Have a great Christmas and a very merry new year."

Just been to post off a parcel to my brother, and thought I'd bump this, I'm such a bad sister, it had completely slipped my mind that parcels up to 2kg are completely free to send to personnel on operation.
I know I am not the only one with relatives serving abroad, but if you are looking for a worthwhile use for some H&B I know it would be appreciated. My brother is in one of the middle east hot spots at the moment - temps are soaring, had an email from him and it was reaching 50 degrees during the day and still 40 degrees at night :faint: Imagine doing that in full kit!
I've only sent a small parcel, with a book, some choc (which I am worried is going to melt before it gets there!), shower gel, some paper aeroplanes to keep him amused, a card and some sweets - gummy haribos (was all he wanted :D).
I have an address for his squadron, I don't really want to post it on the main board, but if anyone would like it please let me know. I was trying to see if there was an official scheme for all year round, but it seems most of them are christmas only, which I agree is an important time of year, but parcels from home are always welcome.

My son is also serving in Afghanistan at the moment:Cry: and it is great to be able to send free parcels. Last time he was there they tried writing to some large companies to get some freebies and did get a few nice goodies, but some just didn't bother, which I think is awful when you think what profit these companies make.
Wonder if Mr T would send some freebies if I asked?
Do weigh your parcels before taking to the PO as if they just a few grams over they will make you take stuff out!!!!

Joining this thread late as I've just seen it, so can I check
- we seem to have 2 relatives of PTSers
-could I have both addresses PMd to me, and I'll happily send a couple of boxes.
Does stuff have to be new, since I have lots of secondhand books I could happily send. Otherwise I could send proof copies.
Also I work in publishing and I could ask a few people if they would mind sending a few boxes - I'm imagining mainly thrillers would go down well with perhaps some sports biographies?
For toiletries - deodorants, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, shower gel, anything else?

oh you lot are fab, give me some time to pm you all.
I'm happy to share my bro's address, and more than happy for ploppy (and anyone else) to pm people with her addresses.
I've just found out that it is only free if it is going to a named soldier - otherwise you have to pay, but I warned my bro he might get some random parcels and he is happy to share things out, I think I will contact the laision officer tomorrow tho, she might be able to give me a list or something.
Polo
21st July 2008, 18:11
If you want to send a parcel - please PM Ploppy or Michelle 111 for the addresses-No more needed to go to my brother, thankyou.
Ideas of things to go in the parcels
Toiletries
Shower gel, Talc, roll on deodorants (NO AEROSOLS), deodorant wipes, soaps, flannels/sponges, pocket tissues, combs, baby wipes (useful when out on ops and not near water), moisturising creams, vaseline, eye drops, lypsyl/chap sticks, water-free handwash-gel type, sun creams, after sun, toothpaste and toothbrushes, razors and shaving balm (not aerosol type)
Other bits
Sweets - boiled/gummy style/liquorice/assortments/mints/toffees (NOT Chocolate-it melts)
Books - second hand are fine (they tend to pass them round between them)
Magazines (not adult!) - Car/bike/puzzle ones
UHT Milks - little cartons type if you can pinch them ;)
Sachets for flavouring water (eg Nunn)
I've sent some cheapo games too-card games, paper aeroplanes, dice games I guess.
Please consider where they are going - ie. no 'adult' material or anything religious/political, that could upset the locals.
***NO AEROSOLS***
Information here about restricted items: http://www.bfpo.mod.uk/mail_prohibitions.htm
Please weigh before you go to the post office - the limit is 2kg - mine was 100g over this morning so I took a couple of bits out (just thinking gels and things weigh quite a bit).
Please wrap well as it is possible to get damaged in transit-also tape down any lids on gels etc to be on the safe side. Also a good idea to wrap in sandwich bags - they can then be reused to protect kit etc.
Include a card/letter and an address if you wish to do so, I know the lads/lasses would like to write back and say thanks, if they get the chance to do so.
Shoeboxes - You don't need to use shoeboxes, but a box that sort of size is ideal, I got a box from tescos (funnily enough) its a red postage box and was about £1.40 - this is the right sort of size to get most things in, and seals securely too, but if you need shoeboxes probably best to ask in the local shoe shop? (Only point to note is that these actually go via normal post-so need to be strong boxes :D)
I'll try and update this post, as when I think of things.
Thanks everyone :grouphug:

Good thinking Ploppy, My bro does know about this, as I spoke to him about it, but think he will be overwhealmed by the response. He is going to pass them round the squadron, but to get the free postage you have to have a name on the parel, otherwise I'd say just send them to the sqn.

Lipsyl/chapstick is great, especially in the desert heat (just not the glimmery pink one :D)
Second hand books are fine! They will be battered and passed about so don't need to be new! Just remember the weight limit - might be an idea to do several parcels, I don't want anyone getting charged!

I helped out doing this one year with work.
One thing we put in was the resealable sandwich bags (the one with the little plastic grippy things you can never get undone)
because there's so much sand and dust out there anything that gets wet in their wash bag immediately becomes covered in grit but if they can put it in the resealable bags it isn't quite as bad.
We tended to seal each item in a separate bag so if it leaked on its journey it didn't go everywhere.

Another tip if u r buying any full sized products from say *Clarins* for example, ask them if they have any sample sizes. My local debs is usually pretty good at handing these out when u buy something.

Indy - I don't think thats tight at all! They will be grateful for anything and I don't want people spending huge amounts of money that they can't afford, so please don't feel you have to.
Freebies and Samples are a very good idea, magazines if you buy them anyway, send them on once you've read them, I can't wait til he lets me know they've started arriving - he is going to be like father christmas :clap2: I'm so excited!!
I apologise in advance if I've missed you off the list, but wanted to say a big thanks to the following:
Hidetheplastic, Monkeypuzzle, Meonlya, Irishsmurfy, Angel dust, Indy, Novagirl, Floosy, Sparkles, Salsa, ChristinaF, Mum1964, Holliemon, Britchic4, Sianij, Dominic, Michelle111, Tiger, Suziq, Hotpot4, Freebird.

Thanks everyone - and don't forget Ploppy and Michelle111 also have relatives serving, so please pm them for details too :D

Only just looked at this thread and would love to help out with a few boxes. Will get some stuff together and some boxes and then get in touch with people for addresses.
My brother was out there but not now as he is not in the forces anymore so my thoughts are with everyone out there and everyones families back here.
What about postage? Is it free as it is BFPO? What type of postage is needed (first class/parcel post etc)?
If I do one female and one male do I need to label them? Do you need to put a list of what is in the box in case it gets inspected?
Sorry for all the questions (point me in the right direction if i have missed all this on previous posts).

I was thinking of putting some John Freida serum 5mls (that i got free from Boots :)) in as i'm sure the girlies would love it. Also got some greatly reduced tampons/ st's in Boots so gonna put them in too- apparently they're good for tinder and plugging bullet wounds (sorry if that sounds awful- it's not meant too) so the peeps on MSE tell me :)

Floos - you never behave!
I was planning to put some CW stuff in the girlie boxes, and some samples of hair improving stuff. Was also going to put some ST's (with the tin boxes) in too, but hadn't thought of them using them for anything other than the normal!
Thanks again guys :D

i got some intense conditioner sachets as well that wil get thrown in - sounds bad that all the stuff in mine is stuff i bought but not used ... just spotted a sample of Nivea for Men at side of desk here that OH never opened - pop that in as well
most of my shower gel shampoo went to womens refuge as basics so these are treat boxes for the forces - might even put a piccie in!
michelle111
26th July 2008, 20:29
OK, this might be a stupid question with it being 50 degrees over there but, especially in the girly box, would any CW stuff be good do you think? I was thinking more of the choppy texture paste and serum than anything else... the serum might be good to rejuvinate hair after being in that heat/sun and it might be nice to pamper ????
Please tell me if being totally stupid :o
i send my neice hair stuff all the time they love it ,also she has to have her hair back and tied so she loves anything that will stick down the fly away bits and still look good "a girls still got to look her best even driving a tank in a war zone"....any hair products would happily welcomed im sure...also when they get a bit of time off they like to look and smell human and girlie again:)..so im sure whatever they would love it Hannah

I've not been around for a while but have just been reading several pages of this as my OH is off to Afghanistan in September so it's giving me some good ideas of what I can send out to cheer him up, He can tell me what to send but it's the stuff he doesn't ask for that will make a difference I think. Lots of good ideas on here giving me lots to think about !. Might cheer me up as well doing them as the first month or so is really hard to adjust. Took my boxes to send yesterday. what a circus !!!!
First of all she wanted to charge me £6.90 per box and then argued with me that the BFPO addresses were not ones that were free but was constantly telling me not to tell her where they were going as she is not allowed to know :noidea:
Eventually she agreed it was on the list and then said I had to complete a DHL customs form  then she checked with her colleague and came back to say I just had to complete a little white stick on customs form and sign it :help: Did everyone else have to do this? It asked for detailed listings of contents. I didnt, i just put toiletries, biscuits, gifts. Hope that is ok?
I tell you, if there wasnt a glass window betwee me and her it would have been :boxing:
Youd have thought she was having to pay to send them for me the way she disagreed with it

Oh what a palava Hannah2, I didn't have to do any of that, sounds like she was a jobworth (does she work part time in tescos too?).
My lovely post office confirmed they were free if under 2kg, and it went on the Personnel's number and the BFPO address. She even lent me scissors etc to repackage mine as it was overweight (ops).
I didn't need to do a customs form either, but don't worry, sounds like she didn't really know what she was doing!

Yes, you always have to fill in those forms. Just say biscuits, sweets etc. I ask for a few to take home and then I've got them all stuck on ready for next time.
And she was right, she is not allowed to know where different BFPO addresses are, big security thing.

I've got three boxes here ready to go send - one for my bro, one for ploppy's son and one for michelles niece.
I don't think I posted it on here but have found out my brother is due home earlier than expected (think he got the dates wrong), therefore I am not sending out his address, parcels already sent and those due to be sent imminently should be fine, but would hate for parcels to get there and then follow him home! He will share them out and things they won't use in time will go onto the next regiment to be taking over from them.

I'm completely overwealmed by the response of strangers, we've just found out my brother will (fingers crossed) be home a month earlier than expected, and therefore I've decided not to give his address to anyone else - otherwise he will disappear under a pile of boxes and not have time to hand them all out and for him and his colleagues to use them all. (Don't worry will not go to waste as they will pass them on to those replacing them).

Hi
We have a local collection centre in Ayrshire and another great thing to add to your boxes are perfume/aftershave samples. Well done everyone.

Guy's can I just ask does it have to be a box? as the p/o had some good strong bags I have used for ebaying and it would remove some of the weight, also tescies had some large padded envelopes very cheap as well
Cheers

No, doesn't have to be a box, but remember it will be flown thousands of miles and thrown about quite a lot. So if using a padded envelope, be careful what you put in it.

cheers for that hun, was thinking sweets and books for the envelope, doesn't matter so much if they are thrown around

Its great to see that people are supporting our soilders, my fiance is in Afghan so I know how much it means to them to recieve parcels and how good it is for moral. We get the bonus points and they get a little treat!! Keep up the good work everyone. :)

I caused a sensation in our local P/O when I went with mine as they had never done one before (small village) they all thought it was great when I told them all about pts and what we were doing, I have been 3 times now with parcels for polos bro and michelles niece so am now doing one for ploppy's son, I have enjoyed doing it I have to say.
