I am a big lazy dirty moo when it comes to the oven. Solution ? And I don't know if I dare admit to this, but I pay a company to come in and do it once or twice a year.

I'm not really extravagant honest but just feel thats one treat I deserve :p .

mine is supposed to be self cleaning - so really only need to clean the bottom and glass door - ok i'll make a start tonight ...... plus the shelves ....... oh and then I guess I should clean the top oven we only use for grilling - that ones not tooo bad ..... one oven at a time me thinks - then maybe clean the top of the cupboards - arghhh its never ending

If your sink is large enough for the shelves to fit in, leave them soaking in a solution of washing soda dissolved in hot water. Leave them to soak for a few hours and they will come up like new.
Don't use it on anything aluminium.

heres a suggestion that a friend of mine told me about....
it will help you clean the shelves anyway in an eco way...
Run a bath of water really hot add in a couple of washing powder tablets put the wire racks in, leave for an hour.
Then scrub them with a spontex handy tough scourer (from Mr T), the racks will come up like new and will remove all the brown smurgly marks from fat etc.

Can't help with the inside of the oven though, its too big to fit in the bath!!!

That's why your oven needs cleaning then. It's probably all the baked on washing powder. :D

Aye, you may be right Tiger...

back to topic, my oven cleaning regime is:

- Clean regular - definitely after a few spitting joints
- Scourer, fairy, boiling hot water and loads of elbow grease.

Always works for me, marigolds and pinafore are optional, but I like them :D

19th March 2007, 08:51
Stardrops does the job well, or washing soda.
Also I know it sounds boring but, a little wipe every time you cook, means it nevers gets to that dreading to do it stage.

Freckles
19th March 2007, 09:12
Yeh, thats what i should do Maverick!
I also read somewhere recently that a thick paste of bicarb, salt and warm water left on tough bits makes them easier to clean.
STILL haven't done my oven lol!

I got some a few months back in Waitrose. Not cheap, but worth it. I have never had to clean the oven since... just wipe down the sheets into the bin and wash them in the dishwasher or wipe them down. I think they were something like £5 and you cut them to size. You just use them over and over again :D

I paid about £5 for mine originally from Betterware or Kleenezee.
Since then, I have found a couple of traders on car boots selling same thing for £1 :clap2: Well worth a look if you go to a car boot ;)

I use Oven Pride on my oven, it is a gel type liquid. It comes with a big bag which takes your oven racks, pour the liquid in and leave for a few hours.
The grease just dissolves off them and brings them up lovely and shiny :)
It doesn't smell, but is pretty powerful stuff, comes with protective gloves too.

You may laugh at this . . but for all the chrome / steel shelves / fittings that you can take out of the oven . .

I find Nitromors paintstripper (water soluble) is the very best!

Spray it with mr muscle or the like, stick it in a bin bag overnight and then take it to the local car wash a jet wash it off, comes up like new!

Have been doing this for about 2 years now, previously baking soda in a hot bath but you get all of the crap down you plug hole and it scratches your bath!

Just remembered another source for the Oven Liners - before finding them on a car boot, I bought a few in Morrisons, think they were about £1.99?

They don't have them as a regular line, but when I got them last, they were on strips (same as Little Swimmers) hanging from shelves in food aisles.

Betterware / Kleenezee ones are no different to the ones I have bought from the car boots expect a very hefty price difference ;)

Fan does the same with the liners :(

To get around this, I use liners in my grill pan and roasting tray and fold one in half to use on a smaller tray if I am cooking anything which could stick :)

Havn't cleaned my oven for nearly a year  - Have been v v busy!

Can anyone recommend a really good oven cleaner - ideally as fast acting as possible! Am not scared of using a bit of elbow grease but will need to do it on an evening when children in bed and if I have to stop for it to work I will probably fall asleep and not get it finished!!! Ha-Ha.

didn't see this thread- doh! Have read it all now!
