Any artists out there? I'm just after a quick opinion basically.
DDs 13 and has always been quite good at arty stuff and drawing. She doesnt have a great deal of confidence in her abilities and thinks we just say its good cos we have to as her parents:rolleyes:.She's won a couple of school related comps and had one of her drawings published in a school calendar (out of 1500 pupils-only 24 were chosen) so we think she has talent.
The question is - is it a skill to draw sketches of a person/thing from a photo?
I think is must be easier to copy a cartoon/sketch and that its more difficult to do it from photographs.
She just did a picture of her niece that we think is out of this world but she doesnt think its much as she did it in less than half an hour.

I'm not an artist myself Zaul but my DIL is and she has done sketches and paintings of people from photos.
She's done art at college.
I would say that your daughter has talent.

Zaul - - if I were you I'd do everything to encourage her art, speak to the relevant teachers at School, maybe see if there are any evening classes at local schools / colleges . .
To be able to draw/paint/copy/make is indeed a valuable skill, whether from a cartoon or real-life . . . .
Go for it - - I liken having 'Art' skills to being able to play music - -
It's a wonderful gift - and an all-too rare talent

I remember Rolf Harris once saying something about all young children start off believing they can draw but by the time they leave school, most are quite certain that they can't. Says a lot.

*I do but shes no belief in herself
I thought it was more difficult to sketch from a photo.Shes produced some marvellous stuff but this most recent one blew us away.
The niece has got a copy of it in a frame in her house. She says "its scary because its really me".
I scanned it into the PC but dont know how to get it on here or I would.

Zaul join photobucket (http://photobucket.com/)
Put your photos on there and then you can upload them to here.
It's all explained very simply. It must be because I can do it. :D

Tiger - - you really should have more confidence in yourself . . .. :)
Just because we're crusties doesn't mean that we shouldn't be able to do stuff - - in fact - - when you think about it - - we can do loads of things the youngsters can't do yet!!!!:D

Your daughter certainly has a talent and well done for encouraging her. I would also speak to her teachers and she may be able to make some pocket money out of her skills.
I am about to do dd room up again and have been speaking to our local college regarding someone doing a mural on one of her walls and confidence came up in the conversation with the tutors.
Good Luck for her future - let us know how she gets on and can't wait to see her piccie x

A lot of artists photograph scenes they want to paint and then use that to paint from. I don't see this as any different. :D

You sometimes see ads in the weekend papers offering to do portraits or caricatures from photos.

Zaul if you click on the yellow icon in the tool bar above the reply box, a box opens for you to copy the url of your image - it's the IMG code on photobucket.
That shows the photo on here without clicking on a link.

Very good sketch! Its a gift and a talent. I joined a local art group when I was 14 and sold some paintings, so maybe an idea?
I still paint mainly flowers.

I looked at the two pics Zaul and had to go back to your original post as I thought I'd mistaken her age :o, she most certainly has talent, I'd be tempted to allow her to simply enjoy it for herself for now without too much pressure and to encourage her to follow the arts through gcse's etc :)

Zaul, have just looked at these pictures and they are amazing - a definate talent - let her read our replies and she will maybe appreciate that she has a real talent and should be as proud of herself as her mummy, granny & auntie are.

Wow, that amazing! When we visited the Edinburgh Festival last year there were loads of street stalls doing these, and charging at least £8 a go as well. She could make a small fortune!
