Navigo 3.5" Sat Nav V2 - UK Maps £44.99inc vat (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/146672)
BUT
The software that comes with them is useless but if you use Google you can find out how to put your own TomTom on them.
Start by looking at the Ebuyer reviews at the link above.

I would agree but what put me off the TomTom was no SD card support or Bluetooth.
If you buy a UK map model you can never put UK/Euro maps on it as there is not enough memory on the device.
If you have one that takes a SD card you can swap the cards giving you different maps or different settings, I have one set up for all speed cameras to be speak the speed limit and another for limited cameras.
If you can get an older model then that would be good.

I would go into Halfords and have a look at their working models to get a feel of what you like( I like the widescreen ones) and what features you need.
and then use the info to search the net for a cheaper one.
I think a lot of it is down to personal preference.

I have had too, my original was a navman totally useless, tried to use it 10 times and it never once connected to a satelite, took back to John lewis and got a full refund - this kind of put me of for a while but as my hubbie does not drive and I travel to glalas all over the country with my son I wanted another one but did not know which to get. Spent lots of time looking on the net and then went on hols to US as a last minute thing hired one when we arrived, wow it was really good and saved us hours of driving in three weeks - when we came home I hit amazon and got the same make and not looked back since I now have a Garmin Nuvi and it updates via my laptop and a lead (as you can tell I am really technical) and not had any probs wiht it at all except did not like the english voice so I have an American which can be annoying but hey ho can't have it all can we

My OH didn't want a Sat Nav but I bought him one anyway a couple of Christmases ago and we now wonder how we managed without it. (I just knew he would love it eventually!)
We have a TomTom One. (bought from Tesco a couple of Christmases ago with 1000 extra points code plus extra points for the purchase - which I seem to remember is why I decided to buy him one!) Just had UK on it but when we went to France last summer we downloaded french maps from their website and it proved invaluable. Made such a huge difference to our holiday taking my parents sight seeing around Brittany

We have just travelled back from the Alps and have realised how many roads have been built and changed that the sat nav does not know about. Our sat nav is built into our Honda and is only 2 years old so dont buy a second hand one unless you can update it.
Other than that they are brilliant and I would not want to be without one now. I dont have to map read anymore so no more arguements when we get lost
