hya just wondered if we could start a thread for tips and help on costumes for the world book day as i struggle every year? please.
last year DD went as little bo peep (big pink dress charity shop, staff thing out of paper curled her hair for ringlets and sewed fluffy white cloud sheep on dress and have her sheep and basket of wool for sale etc) DS went as lollipop man suit on yellow jacket over cardboard hat and cardboard lollipop.

OMG do they have to get dressed up:eek:
Saw on MSE that peeps should look out for £1 book tokens that kids get at school, apparently can be used at Tesco's if you buy a book.

lol last year i had sleeping beauty, a zombie & betty boop :D
nothing to do with books but when the kids are getting older they dont want stupid costumes. I sont really think that the school cares who they go as it's just an excuse to dress up. I think that the teachers must enjoy it as last year we had
ww2 refugee, comic relief, world book day, pirate day, children in need, jeans for jeans etc
with 3 kids it gets bloomin expensive to keep forking out for costumes that they aint gonna wear again:mad:

Last year DS school all went in Pyjamas (I'm assuming because of bedtime stories) which was really easy and they all thought it was very funny. Even the teachers braved pyjamas. I remember being stopped by a very confused old lady on the way to school, she couldn't understand why she kept seeing kids in their pj's and dressing gowns:D

Yes I posted a heads up about the £1 voucher on MSE.
Every year I have read posts on MSE of people - wrongly - getting turned down at the tills because Tesco don't accept Book tokens but I wanted to shout out that you CAN use the £1 off voucher in any Supermarket or large bookseller if you are buying a book.
If you know your store is a pain about coupons then why not raise the Q at the CS desk now, in advance?
Go & say you know it's World Book Day next week and that Tesco definitely take part. But say that last year you were wrongly turned away when you went to use your voucher against a book. Say you want to be sure they know this year that they SHOULD be allowing them?:D Then wait for the chorus of 'no', refer up the line, another 'no' etc...until you finally get someone who actually knows it's a yes! Or get Dundee on the phone if you have to (but they never have a clue so that's a last resort TBH).
Don't just ask 'are you accepting World Book Day vouchers next week?' That's a closed question which will just get the response 'no love, we don't accept any book vouchers'. Waste of a chance to get them to find out the right answer, if you are going to try at the CS desk then state the facts in your own words, politely & confidently, and don't put the ball in their court.
And if you get a no next week at till then stand your ground if you are buying a book. If a Supervisor is stupid enough to say they don't take Book tokens 'as we don't get the money back' smile & explain that NO retailer gets the money back on these, it's a special scheme to encourage a book purchase once a year and all Supermarkets participate and foot the bill.

We did that one year, very very simple, and DS enjoyed playing with the dinosaurs all day! :D

Think it was world book day that got me into coupons in the 1st place, when they did the quick read leaflets a few years ago with the £1 coupons on. They were fab!

I noticed Asda Living has spotted a gap in the market and provided some World Book Day costumes in store - from memory they have 4 different Mr Men/Little Miss costumes £8 each, Little Red Riding Hood, Alice in Wonderland, probably a couple more. DD was desperate for the pink Little Miss one but I'm a mean mummy and as she already has at least 20 dressing up outfits she can use one of those....bound to be in a book somewhere!

yes it was in asda yesterday that i saw the signs for booksday and thought oh no here we go again, the problem is my school runs a bit of a competition causes trouble every yr but still they persist the best original costume in each class wins a fiver book token, but the snag is it has to be made etc, so my kids want to take part and thus i end up panicking not because i want them to win but because im rubbish but dont want to let them down lol, sent ds in one yr as happy feet bought from ebay he told them id made it won the token and then it caused merry mayhem, so im a bit against all this how can you expect working mums to sit making things espesh if they have few kids and little money or just not too good at this kind of thing.

If you have a child at primary school, you'll probably be acutely aware that next Thursday (5 March) is World Book Day - a day that requires many world-weary parents to gird their loins and help their child come up with a literary character-based costume for school that they're happy with and that their child will be agree to wear in public. If this describes your situation, you'll be pleased to know we have a selection of costume ideas to get you started here.
