Do you have an upmarket dress hire shop nearby?
you might be able to get something nice from there, and may be better for your mum that visiting several shops.
The assistants in a good hire would instantly know what would suit your mum.

Other than that why not enlist the help of a personal shopper at your nearest dept store, again they will have a good idea of what is suitable and will treat your mum very well.

Suziq

Have a look in East if there is one close to you, they specialise in natural fibres and quite unstructured clothes but also smart enought for a wedding. They also have great accessories, strong colours and go up to larger sizes.

I hope you all have a great day, fruit salad is a fab idea :)

what about ann harvey, they do some nice stuff for larger ladies. My sister always get her "masons do" outfits from there.

Suzi, I was both mother of a bride and groom last year when my two eldest got married and know what it's like finding the right outfits. I was lucky that a local upmarket shop was closing down and having a big sale. I didn't order, but did have a look on ebay.com at American sellers. There was some lovely outfits and they cater well for larger ladies. They sometimes call them church outfits if you're doing a search.

My Mam had a lovely dress with a 3/4 overjacket for wedding from House of Fraser, and another from Evans, plus my dsnan had one last Autumn from Evans as well.
