well, it does say evening and weekends so there should be some scope there, just be careful not to take on too much (although I understand why you are doing it) , although I suppose this is only for a few months.

I did this last time around, was it really 10 years ago
Can I just say that it was a LOT of work and time, you have to go to people's houses at least twice if you don't get them in...there was a lot of paperwork...and you don't (or we didn't) get given your own home area - so you could be sent anywhere within the district and remember that, er, some areas are less salubrious than others.
From memory there was a full day training, I think it was on Saturday, and although the rest of the visiting could be done anytime, you weren't allowed to call back at the same time if you missed them the first time...ie if they weren't in on a Tuesday evening at 6pm, you had to go back in the morning or weekend, not in the evening again IYSWIM
Having said all that, I quite enjoyed it and will be applying again, but just wanted peeps to know it's actually quite a big commitment for the amount they pay you :)
PS Think some of it is to be computerised/online this time, so may be a lot easier :)

Thanks - have applied for the Census Coordinator position but I found the application form a bit odd as there were no questions about experience or current employment? Please can anyone tell me if I have missed a bit - I did go through it a few times.
Hope I get it anyway - would really enjoy it as exactly the sort of thing I do and is in my Village!

In my local area there is a Census Coordinator position, infact their seems to be quite a few of those (perhaps no one wants to do it). Has anyone ever applied for this before?
Their is a Special Enumerator position too, though not quite as close as the above position, I think this is actually delivering the questionnaires, the extra money would be welcome questioning whether to apply or not.
I am in a managerial position at work now, though only part time so could fit this in not sure whether to apply for both.

I was looking at this the other day as I have been looking out for local vacancies. I remember hearing something a few months ago that this census was going to use a lot more computer based info already collected so I'm not sure there will be door to door census collection. I was out of the country last census and don't remember as far back as the other. Would have been a student then I guess. Still thinking about whether to apply.

if you click on the linky in suzywoo's post there are hourly pay rates there....can't imagine the scottish ones being different as would imagine they are civil service pay scales. IIRC the Scottish one mentioned £2200 for the co-ordinator job based on 11hrs a week.

Think last time it was paid in 2 instalments - part payment midway through and the rest at the end
As I said in a previous post - the pay is a lump sum and not based on how many hours you actually put in

Princess kerry, the special enumerator last time (and again things may well have changed this time) was the person who went to places like nursing homes, hospitals, prisons etc to do the census for people there, instead of the "ordinary" enumerators who went to people's houses :)

I'm going to apply for a special enumerator position, I did the Census 10 years ago and If I recall it was a lump sum but the special enumerator is an hourly rate.
My sister and I had 2 areas next to each other and we did it together.
The local authority I work for also has similar work for the electoral role, hand delivering forms and then 3 follow up visits. I didn't do it this year but my sis is, they pay in a lump sum and she gets the money in January.

I worked as an Enumerator last time too and would like to echo Pumpkin's comments.
It is hard work and takes a lot of time and effort, reading the job description this really doesn't come across.
You have to work at differing times of the day and it is not something I would take on alongside a full time job.
My area was about 3 miles away from where I live - as Pumpkin said, you are not given your own locality for obvious reasons as you are taking personal info from each individual.
You do get paid mileage allowance, I can't remember how much it was as it was a long time ago.
The Co-Ordinator job is very full on and I would suggest best suited to someone who doesn't work or works only a few hours a week.
The area manager asked me to assist my Co-Ordinator as the workload was such that despite her working her allocated hours, there was no way she could get through all the form checking on her own let alone the rest of her duties.
I will be applying to be an Enumerator again this time as I did enjoy it and hope that some of you will do so too.

Hi Spottiswode & Made In Devon,
I actually did the Census last time around, and found I got more responses during the evening / weekend, when more people are at home. Try to avoid tea-time and lunch time on Sunday to avoid upsetting the occupants!
Quite easy to fit it in around full time work. From what I remember, quite a few people had other jobs.

Had my telephone interview about a week ago and have not heard yet. I think they said I would hear in a few weeks. I thought the "interview" was more like a robot reading questions than a conversation. The only discussion was at the end when they asked what attributes are required to work with the public and I thought of lots of good replies after the call had ended!!

Those of us who started yesterday are Special Enumerators. We visit Communal Establishments, such as care homes, universities, hospitals, hotels etc. For the first 3 weeks of our employment we visit the establishments that have been assigned to us (I have 43) to deliver the relevant forms and for the last 3 weeks of our employment we collect the forms back.
Ordinary households receive their form through the post and this can either be returned in the pre-paid envelope or completed online.
Princess Paula, I think it is really unfair that your co-ordinator has arranged your appointments.

Deb, same happened to a neighbour of mine re reference only last week.
He had given several but was asked for another for some unknown reason so rang me and asked if it was OK for Census person to phone me for a character ref within the next half hour.
I happily gave the ref and all was well.
Talking to neighbour and comparing notes between my work as an Enumerator in 2001 and his employment this time you wouldn't think we were talking the same jobs/organisation or rather lack of the latter

My reference was given by my friend last Friday - I really think this isn't going to happen.

at last, i got the email today with final offer and i start on Wednesday !! person giving character ref was telephoned on Friday, and email sent straight out. Apparently my co-ordinator will contact me on the day i start ? very strange way of doing things and still not sure i want to do it now. Feel like i have forgotten everything i learnt when doing the e-learning :(

My sis is doing census and she had a naked lady open the door to her today!!!!
Naked lady did put a coat on but didn't do it up. My sis said she tried to maintain eye contact throughout but she was a bit of a talker and kept my sis on the doorstep for ages! Lol

lol mrs Tom i wouldn't mind a naked man opening the door to me, would make a boring job rather interesting ;) I've had a man dressed as a woman open the door, that didn't bother me but the fact he had better boobs than me was slightly annoying :o
