View Full Version : Son stands to lose £6000 as training company goes bust.

Ahhhhhh. Ds2s dream of training to become a plumber has just been pulled from underneath his feet. He has just received an email from the training company he paid £6,000 to the week before Christmas telling him that they had just gone bust. This was financed through a zero percent finance deal that the training company organised through a partner scheme with a subsidiary of a high street bank.
We hope that the bank share responsibility for this as they provided the finance in a partner scheme with the company, but if not, then ds2 will be the best part of £170 a month worse off for the next three years.
We will be off to the Citizens Advice tomorrow to see what we can do to help, but meantime, anyone any ideas?
I feel so sad for him as he was investing in his future, and now this.

Sorry to hear this, How has your son paid for his training? A friend had this problem last year but had paid by credit card and he got his money back :)

That's awful :( Hope he gets it sorted. I should imagine that the bank would share responsibility, but he is definately doing the right thing getting proffessional advice.
Has he tried local colleges for plumbing courses? Our friend did evening classes to become an electrician that way.

Oh Snails that's just dreadful news for him. How are the youngsters supposed to get jobs when this sort of thing happens?. If he doesn't get a refund get on to your MP. This sort of thing is very political and will make good debate in the pre election build up so he/she should show some interest

[QUOTE=boysmum;1116895]Sorry to hear this, How has your son paid for his training? A friend had this problem last year but had paid by credit card and he got his money back :)
The training company organised an interest free credit loan through Barclays Partner Finance - it's in our name - wish we'd paid by cc, but you think Barclays.
That's awful :( Hope he gets it sorted. I should imagine that the bank would share responsibility, but he is definately doing the right thing getting proffessional advice.

We wanted him to go through the local college/night school but he wanted to do it now and didn't want to have to wait.
I feel so desperate for him as he's bet the bank on this.

Have a look at this link to an Electricians Forum - they are discussing it and someone has mentioned that the Loan Company is as responsible for allowing the finance? I don't know the full ins and outs as it is not my total area of expertise but I would have thought that this close to them going down that if you inform Barclays asap they may be able to reverse the finance deal or at least help in claiming back?

Thanks thanks thanks - I went to bed last night and tossed and turned full of worry, then this morning I'm in tears because of the help and support from you guys.
Am trying to get an appointment at the CAB (today is appointments only) - but keep getting the automated service - will keep trying.
Ds2 is 22 but I feel like mamma bear with one of her cubs - and here's me doubting my maternal instinct sometimes.:)
Am off now to study the minute of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 - fingers crossed x

Hi Again!
Have just had a word wth my boss regarding this situation - was hoping to speak with the accountant but he is busy with Tax returns - and the general feeling is that if we were in the same position we would be consulting a solicitor as soon as possible as you want to get things in motion quickly. At the end of the day a £30 appointment could save you thousands. Unfortunately liquidation is a worse scenario than administration but is not the end of the world.
What was the cooling off period on the finance deal - this would be the first thing to look into as the period may not have expired yet and could still be cancelled.? It may be that the finance company is indeed partially or fully responsible and they may have some sort of indemnity against this - it is not likely but is certainly possible.
I haven't given all the details to my boss as didn't want to discuss your private bsuiness but we feel dreadfully sorry for your son and it is fairly S*** what this company have done as they must have known full well what was going to happen. What is worse is that he is trying to get himself a decent career and he has been shot down before he started! I really hope you get sorted out and would have loved to have been more help x

I have also got a credit ageement with Barclays on the professional electicans course if you have a look at the agreement there is a phone number on there to contact Barclays, they themselves were unaware of the situation with the training company until 5:30 last night, I have spoken to trading standards and the bank, the onus is now on the bank to find an alternative course of the equivalent or better than we were doing if this is not possible then the bank loses the money they have paid to the training company, I hope my advice is useful Adrian LLB Honours (law degree)

Hello and welcome, just a pity we "meet" at such a fraught time. This is such good news, thank you!
We have been to the CAB today - but it was appointments only day, so we have to go back tomorrow to speak to someone and then get an appointment.
David is working this evening - he's delivering pizza for Dominoes to fund this plumbing course - but this news will cheer him up enormously - it has me :D

Just noticed from the address they are very close to me - do you want me to go round & sort them out! This is also the same address for Advent Training (IT courses) - my DS 23 was looking at this last year & thankfully didn't go there as it was too expensive. Advent were the company highlighted on last nights TV news - & were also linked to Barclays.
My DS 17 was lucky enough to get a gas heating & plumbing apprenticeship straight from school & will be qualified in the summer. All this latest news makes me realise just how lucky we were! :o
Hope everything works out for you & your son snails - don't give up without a fight :catfight:

Very suspicious - they were obviously distancing themselves as they knew the future!
Good news today!
Saw v helpful people at the CAB who phoned Trading Standards who confirmed what others and Krooney have said in that the bank have responsibility for the provision of alternative training or take the loss. Phew.
Went to our local Barclays branch, and they were so helpful and even rang their Barclays Partner Finance division for us to speak to them.
Barclays Partner Finance were helpful too. They explained that a letter was on its way stating that they were looking to find another training provider and that they would suspend further repayments on the loan. :)
Whilst not fully resolved yet, it's such a relief to know all is not lost. Will keep you all posted as we progress.

Before he signed up for this training, we advised David the best course of action was an apprenticeship, but sadly they are v thin on the ground here. We also suggested he looked at our local college/night school but he wanted to do it quickly - oh how we wish he'd waited.
Hopefully all we will lose here is time - and who knows, if Barclays can't turn anything up he may well end up at local college:)
In the meantime I'm nagging , oops advising him to contact local plumbers and see if there are any openings - I've also suggested he offer his services say one day a week for free to gain practical experience whilst he studies.

We were very lucky indeed to get DS on an apprenticeship - college was no problem but we had a friend in the trade & he is doing really well. Sadly other DS - now almost 23 did really well at school (11 GCSE's A-C) - but them went to college & was advised to do AVCE's (equivalent to A-levels) - they were going to be the next big thing - but just died a natural death! He really wants to get into IT - it is where his talent lies - but has had no luck so far. Had a really good job with Egg Finance - but was made redundant after 18 months:o - now working in Hospitality while sending off loads of applications. It does seem really hard for the kids now - even when they get decent results from school.
It may be worth asking local plumbers if they could join an apprenticeship scheme - I think they get quite a lot from it? http://www.apprenticeships.org.uk/Employers.aspx
Glad to hear you have got better news now :p

Hi Tim, Oh dear, this is awful. The only numbers we have are the general 0800 197 0282 and one for the Training Advisor we had. I've pm'd you the name and mobile number of the Training Advisor.
If you've not already sought advice, I would go see your local Citizens Advice asap as they should be able to offer some help.
Look back through the thread as others have made some really good points - such as contact local MP as training is big news, and there are also some links that may be helpful to you too.

Do as snailsontour said and go to the CAB asap. Unfortunately the company has gone into liquidation as opposed to administration. This is bad news for you as you paid cash as there is usually no comeback because they have closed shop and gone so to speak, however - my knowledge is only experience based from dealing with issues like this with work and I am certainly not an expert.
Good luck though.

Just spotted this, so whilst I can't speak for Tim, I can give an update on our situation.
In a nutshell Barclay's sourced an alternative course with another supplier, which was not quite the same and nor was it what David wanted. We took the case to the Ombudsman but they took the stand point that because my husband had taken out the loan as a guarantor there was no direct link between my husband and Access therefore we had no rights to refund.
That being the case we had no option other than to accept the replacement course as is, or simply lose the £6,000. As it stands we have paid c£4,000 with still another year to run. An expensive lesson in life sadly.

That's disgusting! i bet they never pointed that out at the time of signing!
i makes me really made, when they hide the small print.
slightly off topic, before i went in holiday a cpuple of years ago, i rang the halifax to confirm what our 'account monthly fee' actually covered. they replied they could not send out any printed documents for me to read over, so i had to ask him some questions over the phone. i failed to ask 'if a volcano erupted, would that be classed as 'act of god' and would you pay up?'
i still haven't received a comprehensive guidelines to what i am actually covered for:confused:
however they did in the end pay out for our extended holiday:D
