I've recently bought a mooncup, I've read lots of good reviews from people, but to be honest it just seems too big for me, I just cannot get it in! (Sorry if too much info!) Anyone have any tips?
Just been looking for an alternative and have come accross these Sea Pearls (http://www.seapearls.co.uk/) has anyone used them before?

I haven't I'm afraid but I have heard such good reports about mooncups. I'm always so light though that I'm not sure it will be worth it for me.
Those sea pearls sound a great alternative. I'd love to know what you think of them if you decide to give them a go. :)

did you get the right size as they do come in two sizes - if you got the "larger one" it may be worth getting smaller one - think that they say you can return and refund - have you cut the "stalk" to the right length??
littleange_com
3rd May 2007, 21:44
Yep got the smaller size and its still too big :) Need a tampax sized one - I also am very light, tend to use tampax lites mostly. Not cut the stalk as I can't even get it in at all so dont know how long it needs to be. Might give it one more try next month and see if I have any luck.

You need to wet it with water, and then squeeze it in half and then half again, insert and it will pop out once inside.
You will proberbley find that the stem, is uncomfortable, this needs to be cut untill it is comfortable.
It cant be too big, babies come out of there!
Hope that explains it, better, bit drunk, on the wine lake tonight! It does get easier, and is so worth it perserve.

Thanks Maverik, I don't think I wet it so I will try that next time.

When it's folded up like maverick said, it's not much bigger than a tampon. You might find it easiest to try again when you're nice and relaxed, maybe after a warm bath.
Might try the Sea Pearls. With DH only being home at weekends, he gets a bit narked if I'm using my mooncup when he's home!

It does seem a lot bigger than a tampax lite when folded up, I guess I need to keep trying, I also always use applicator tampons so I guess this seems like a big change, nothing to guide me and its bigger, lol
I'm wanting to use it for environmental, financial and health reasons, I bought mine with boots points too :)
Thanks for all the help guys, I will try again next month and let you know how I get on :)

but have needed to cut the stalk completely off.. its def going to take some getting used to, but seems quite good.

Glad I found this thread... I've been thinking of getting a mooncup to save money & help the environment.
I've just found a site selling them for £14.95 inc P&P.
Also I'm not sure whether to get size A or B? I am aged over 30 but not had kids???
The mooncup site says over 30's should get a size A bigger one? Not sure though?
How you are all geting on with yours?

Just checked out my two local Boots are they both sell them, but for £19.99.
Please tell me that it is obvious if they are 50p? They are in the clearance bit right? SEL said £19.99 and they were by the Tampax etc.

I thought "Yuk" when I first heard off them but I have read a few reviews and I dont think it is as messy as I originally thought. Plus you dont have the hassle of changing it so often.
Also I resent paying so much for tampons. I can only use the Natracare organic ones and they aren't cheap. Regular tampax make me headachey & sicky and I'm a bit wary of the toxic shock thing.
If anyone finds a cheap one in Boots or has one they don't want please PM me. I'm happy to swap for points!

the yuk factor is not that bad, when you get used to it .
no worse than changing a tampon if your heavy imho.
worth mentioning that lots of people have reported noticably lighter and less painful periods using the mooncup.
I love mine( perhaps love is too strong a word) and now I don't have to worry about tampons blocking our ancient plumbing.

How much detail to go into, hmm, but I wouldn't think it would fill in 24 hours or more, and as it doesn't go that long, its fine. A sports bottle of water is very handy for rinsing it off.

I have a Mooncup and think it's so much better than the alternatives.
Pads I find are a bit horrible... you can feel the damp patch, and also I got paranoid about a smell when I used to wear them. I didn't mind tampons so much but there's the risk of toxic shock and they need changing much more often than Mooncups. I'm quite heavy but haven't had any leakage problems with them, but they are very different and do take some getting used to.
And the worry of spraying it all over the bathroom can be overcome by holding a bit of loo roll underneath as you take it out... of course that doesn't help much if you've had a few drinky-poos and lose your balance :o

hi all,
i have just used one from this week as
suffer from thrush and BV often
want to help the environment
(and my plumbing in the home) sometimes i think the tampax has flushed (and does not always)
cheaper
since using it i have been thinking i will not go back to tampons (unless there is an emergency situation)
At work i have to 'sneak' tampons in my sock, or wear a jacket if i want to 'change' them (as taking a bag into the ladies is kinda obvious.
With the mooncup it is easy, our toilets have a wash basin in each one so i do not need to take water with me.
initially i kept the stalk thingy but now i have cut it off completely and it is so comfy (like a tampon)
i am not a fan of periods etc and i do not like changing pads, tampons or even the mooncup but it is a natural process for a woman to go through monthly so we cannot avoid it.
I would advise anyone to go for the mooncup (i have been thinking about it for 2 years before taking the plunge):clap2:

when hubbie was having his operation me and the mil were talking to the nurses,we got round to the subject of periods.
mil starts going on about my mooncup( she is facinated by it)and pretty soon we have about 7 or 8 nurses asking about it.
they were facinated and most said they would give it a try.
I suppose nurses are naturally not sqeamish and on a budget.

Seriously, I've used my Mooncup for a few years now and it's great, would definitely recommend it. I too had the 'yuck' factor when I first heard about it, but gradually got used to the idea. Once you've been through childbirth a couple of times, you don't find many things yucky any more! :D

Hmm I've looked at these and wondered if they are good or not. The absence of thrush would be the biggest factor in me getting one. I wonder what size though? I'm over 30 (well over in fact). Had 2 kids by caesarian, but was told at my last 2 smears that I'm very small inside. It now in my notes for the nurses to use the smallest speculum as anything bigger really hurts me. - She also said my husband was a very lucky man

I find running it under the tap to make sure its really wet first helps.
If you were a tampon wearer you need to resist the urge to put it too far up.
it will leak if its in too high.
I always put it in and then pull it down a bit until I feel it seal.
Why not have a little practice inserting it when you are not on your period so its not as messy to get it right?(take it out straight away though)

Taken from mooncup website FAQ
Hi,
Just writing for some advice. I bought a Mooncup at Glastonbury festival after wanting one for so long. I have been using it month after month and still I leak. I have to use pads as well, and my main reason for wanting Mooncup was for eco reasons. Please help me because I don’t want to go back to the old ways.
Yours Catherine
Dear Catherine,
I am sorry that you are having problems but I am sure we can find a solution. The most common reason for leakage is not placing the Mooncup low enough in your vagina. The Mooncup needs to be placed just inside the entrance to your vagina, not up near the cervix where tampons are placed.
Also, you need to check that the whole of the stem is fully inside you. Most women need to trim the stem. If you think you need to trim the stem, remove your Mooncup and cut the end with scissors. Trim a little off at a time and reinsert your Mooncup to check how it sits. Repeat this process until it is fully inside you and is comfortable.
Another reason for leakage is due to poor seal formation with your vaginal wall. You can try twisting and rotating the Mooncup once inserted. You can also try pulling the mooncup down slightly and then gently pushing it inward. Clamping your pelvic floor muscles around the Mooncup will also help to create a good seal.
Occasionally leakage can occur because the small holes below the rim of the Mooncup have become blocked. Use a clean pin and remove any debris blocking the holes. Wash your Mooncup and re-insert.
Finally, leakage may be due to the size you are using not being a good fit. In this case please contact the advice service.
Best Wishes
Cathy
Hope this gives you a better idea

I'm quite short and had to remove the stem completly for it to be comfy and low enough not to leak. Also even through I've had 2 kids (sections) and am over 30 the small size suits me great.

how do you get around the 'leaky days/heavy days' when using a mooncup?
Dormouse
18th September 2008, 17:28
I actually find it's very good even for very heavy days as long as it's in properly (which usually takes me a few goes ). Haven't really had any leaks recently, but it's taken me ages to master the technique of inserting it.:D

I still use a pad for backup, but empty the mooncup as often as possible.

fold it in 4,its not so big then, bear in mind how big a tampon gets when its finished its job.
have a little practice when you are not on your period,it can take a while to get the hang of but once you do its so worthwile.
I definatly think it has lightened and shortened my period.

Remember, you need to cut off most (or all) of the stalk so it's not that big. Plus as Pookie said, you fold it anyway. Honestly, it's not that bad! :)

I really don't understand why lots of women are so squeemish about their own bodily fluids and yet seem to have no objection to swapping saliva and allowing their partners to deposit their bodily fluids inside them.
If we were all too squeemish to come into contact with bodily fluids there would be no human race.

Well said - especially when women who have been through childbirth etc are sqeamish about their own blood? I have two children and TBH have had to deal with all sorts of bodily fluids , so nothing fazes me anymore.
Actually, when I first heard about the Mooncup ages ago, I did think it's a bit 'yuck' too so it took a bit of time to get used to the idea. However, I would never actually post on a forum that it is 'yuck' as I do find that offensive to people who use it.

Just bumping this before I take the plunge!
A few questions if I may:
What size should I get, I am 5"11 age 35 and had 2 children naturally?
I usually have light periods and use a mini tampax so will it be worth it or is it just for heavy periods?
Has anyone used one and not got on with it?
Does it feel like a tampax when inserted i/ can you feel it?
Where is the best place to buy one?
Thanks for any replies I don't want to fork out £20 only for it to sit under my bathroom sink with all the other junk.

I can't feel my cup at all and sometimes forget I am on until I go to the bathroom.
I think it is worth it if you have lighter periods as you should have have no problems with it and it will save you a fortune and they must be healthier for you.

I would get the bigger size as you're tall and you've given birth - I think that's what their site used to say anyway.
When you're first getting used to it, you'll probably feel it, but once you get the knack, you shouldn't feel it at all. I quite often forget it's in :o and sometimes even forget I'm on my period :clap2:

Thanks Dormouse have a repl. Still on the fence at the moment. I don't get on with non applicator tampons they always feel they are not in right so am worried I might not get on with a Mooncup. Is it helpful to compare to a tampon or is this a completely different ball game?

I purchased a Femi cup from Amazon for around £13 the other week. Came on yesterday. Cut the stalk off and gave a go and wow! Brilliant. used it yesterday evening and last night and it's been in all day so far at work. Feels really comfy, much better then a tampon can't feel that it's in. Easy to put in and out felt right first time. When I go for a wee I don't need to replace it like I used to for a Tampon. Why did I not do this sooner? Going to be better for the enviroment, save me money and great for when you are on holidays. So happy! anyone on the fence I would recommend. also my stomach ache does not seem to bad.:):):)

Its because most women don't know they even excist, maybe the manufacturers should do free talks in school the way Tampon manufacturers do.
The more women us cup users tell, the more women will discover them.
