Seems a good idea as this is an excellent one - which section - or do we need a "Money Saving Ideas" thread

I use this site quite a lot- drives me nuts that even freephone numbers are not included in my "inclusive" minuits on my mobile phone, this has saved me in the past- esp with my bank who always seem to have long holdtimes!

If you ever have an 0870 number to call, try this site to see if you can call for less.
I use this site a lot! 0870 and even 0845 Nos are one of my gripes, as I get free UK landline calls on the callplan I'm on.
I also use the international call checker on M.S.E., my future father-in-law lives in New Zealand and by calling via one of the cheap-call providers we pay only about 0.5p a minute to ring him.

If you're serious about saving money on your calls, then you need to put in a little effort, but it will pay off.
On MSE, look for the Heinz calling table. Heinz is a member of both MSE an SayNo.
It goes like this.
Keep your BT line.
Sign up to 18185.co.uk to make daytime landline, and anytime mobile calls.
Sign up with Primus, using Primus 2 scheme, giving Free evening and weekend calls, with no connection or any other charges, for up to 60 mins.
Keep your BT line. This cannot be stressed enough.
Keep an eye on niftylist.co.uk for cheaper international calls.
With the way I have it set up, if I made a 10 min call to each option at each time of day, this is what it would cost.
Land.......Day 5p Evening FREE w/end FREE
Mobile.....Day 64p Evening 64p W/end 24p
Hungary land 10p Mobile 60p

some of you may know about this site
http://www.saynoto0870.com/
its a useful site for if you need to ring national and local rate numbers.
you just put a search in for the company or enter the phone number you wanting to contact and it will search for either a free phone number or a geographical number.
this is handly for me as i have unlimited free calls during the day so costs me nowt to ring a 0870 number.
its worth a look

its an excellent site as landline and mobile packages usually include minutes to numbers starting 01 or 02 etc but not 0845 0870 etc
i've used it for a long time and its easy to post a number if you find one that isnt on there

Just thought I would bump this thread as I have used saynoto0870 4 times today and was able to find freephone numbers for 3 of the companies and a local number for the other. Due to the call plan I am on this meant that it didn't cost me for any of these phonecalls and having been on the phone for over an hour it would have cost plenty dialling a 0845 & 0870 number.

As one of the hot topics of conversation this week is reducing household costs I thought this might help.
We have the sky all inclusive call package so I can ring any land line geographical number anytime of the day, week or weekend. It costs extra but this itself is a saving because I can do things like call a store to see if something is in stock before I set off on a wasted journey using up petrol, time etc.
But we still pay for non geographical numbers - eg numbers starting with 0500, 0800, 0808, 0844, 0845, 0870 and 0871. Looking at our bills we probally spend between £5 and £10 extra a month ringing firms with this number, mostly because it takes ages to get through to the person you want to speak to and/or you have to go through numerous button pressing procedures. So I remembered hearing about this website
http://www.saynoto0870.com/
I've put this website on my desktop and in favourites, just have to train myself to use it now. I had to call Admiral this morning so I looked their number up - search button on the left hand side of the home page. There was an unverified 0800 number so I tried this and got connected :clap2:
OK its not going to save earth shattering ammounts each year - maybe £60 - £80 at best but £60 - £80 is still a nice little ammount, pay for a good few £9 travelodge stays or National trust membership or some other such like treat.

I use this all the time too. Even search from my mobile internet before I make a call. I tend to put any I think I might use again into the contacts of my phone as it can be quite time consuming.

Good idea. I've just scribbled out the 0845 number on the letter from Admiral, written in the 0800 number and added it to the reminder on next years calender

Thanks for the tip - will call them tomorrow. i think the oftel/government should step in and make all these companies have alternative 01 or 02 number to call.
i avoid all numbers except 01 or02 as i don't know if they are free or not, they were suppose to state the call charges whe displaying their number-but they dont

I find the worst "culprits" to be government depts, eg Tax Credits & Child Support Agency!! Keep you waiting for ages on hold or while you go through the endless "press 1 for ....." grrrrrrr!

this annoys me the most, i've looked at my bill and it costs me over £1 to call for an appointment and if all appointment have gone that day it's another call the following day:mad:

We have a Talktalk all in phone/broadband package and are not charged for 0845/0870 numbers.
I don't know if other providers have such a package, maybe an option to consider?
The premium number part of the package was a bonus as we wanted it due to the price and other options which made it attractive for us.

Mine Drs too - they said to make them more efficient:confused: personally I just think its a way of money making. I have yet to find a way around 0844 nos:mad: In the old days the line was busy you hung up and rang later now you get put through, queue for a while and then have to hang up and ring later. I usually try and call from work if I need to ring, but probably shouldn't, I would only phone from home in an emergency.
