my DS is taking maths a year early I know how you feel. I feel sick
my DS1 is doing geography a year early as an extra subject.
It was his choice & goodness knows why as hes got enough revision to do but he seems to be taking it in his stride & not worried at all.
Im worried by his laid back attitude, has got me thinking is he really trying hard enough- all I can do is wait & see

It's one of those things that us mums have to go through I'm afraid. I have lots of experience of this having 4 kids and 3 at uni. Best things to do is to detatch yourself somewhat- it's not helping them if you get in a state and in my experience they will do as much work as they feel they want or need to do. Nagging just makes it worse. and if things do go pear shaped it will be a valuable lesson learned for them for the future.

My DS3 is halfway through his GCSE's. As he is at boarding school I think I stress because I can't see how much he has been revising. He was home last week for half term and did nothing! He reckons that his tutors told them to have a complete break.
He did however get himself a summer job as he wants a laptop for 6th form.

please don't worry if your kids have a laid back attitude - this seems very reminiscent of me; indeed I got very drunk the night before my maths exam and sat it with a hangover/headache - I was projected to get a D for it and came out with a B!

it was ten years ago since i done my gcse's..i cant believe how quick that went..i hated school, and did not care one bit about my exams aside from a couple of subjects i was intrested in.. i only done well in music, religeous studies + english..the rest were all E grades.. but i recently done a gcse through nec (open learning) and got an A grade in child development..woohoo..my cv is starting to look a little better..all i want now is a good maths grade as im thinking of applying to study midwifery at university in a few years time :)

Can't believe how relaxed I am this time round even though DD1 appears to be doing very little revision and spending lots of time on the dreaded MSN! However I think that they do lots more revision in school than when DS1 and DS2 were taking their GCSEs
The one thing that I have learned is that nagging never works.

I'm glad he found it ok. Mine said it was not too bad, answered all the questions but 4 were guesses. I have reminded him that it is a year early and he can still sit it next year.

good luck with the maths. I am a GCSE Child Development teacher and my year 11 are busy revising for their exam on the 19th June. A lot of them are going on to college to study the subject further. I wish you well with the midwifery-I think I would have done this if I had not become a teacher.

I have one doing gcse and one doing a levels, good advise from moonriver I agree with your post.
The one doing a levels gets on with revision but the one doing gcse well i feel could do with a kick up the a** but its no good going on at them and causing more stress.
I do think the one taking gcse is more laid back cos its a boy!!

Well my students have just started to come back from their final ICT exam and they reckon it's gone ok... Typically alot of what we covered was not in the exam.. oh well.. got some who took the higher paper still to come and tell me how it went!!

Absolutley.
Eldest cannot give 2 hoots really. She moaned about an English question yesterday. Simple enough - had to write a short piece on banning mobiles from schools. But because she had to think for herself and was nothing to revise (that she wouldn't have done anyway!) then she wrote next to nothing.
I had to close my eyes and "think of England". I get so cross with her, I cannot talk about it with her anymore.
The good bit is that when she gets her results, I can go "in your face" back at her. And use them to remind the 13yo why she is actually working hard.
Flammin kids. Why can they not just accept that we are right and they are not.
Same with my Mum. I mean, what does she know at her age? She is like, so old !:D

I've got 18 ICT project to mark and each one is 70 pages :(
My DD is taking her GCSE's, she has to get at least 4 A's and 2 B's to continue at her school for her A Levels (she is in a grammar school). I am actually quite calm as she go A* and 2 A's for her Moks so i am hoping she will do just as well! I leave her to it as they do so much revision in class and she does tent to revise at times!! Saying this, I may be a bag of nerves next week! Am I too laid back, should I be nagging her

My youngest is really suffering, totally stressed by it all. He has already done his practicals for catering, PE and French oral and the rest start mid May. He gets up in the morning and does a bit of revision, reads stuff in the car on the way to school, does another 20 minites in the library before school, does extra at lunchtime and has done after school extra revision classes until 5 most afternoons all of this school year. And then maybe in the evening he does another hour.
Officially they finish on the Friday before the exams but this year everyone has to come into school again for the two weeks after finish for revision classes.
Although not special needs he has been tested as having a low IQ, maybe 95 but this means he gets no extra help apart from being allowed to use his laptop where needed in school. If he gets the 4 GCSEs he needs for his college course it will be a miracle.
I think we will all be glad when mid June comes and its all over.

And dont do as my eldest did last week, finish her last assignment by doing an all nighter in the library, then on the Friday morning two hours before the deadline, think the libraries system has corrupted and lost her entire 4000 word epic, ring parents up who are 250 miles away, howling and in hysterics, then go back to IT, sort the problem out, hand in work by deadline and then go off to work estatically happy having left her parents emotionally drained and exhausted :D
I swear by making sure they have a good breakfast the morning of the exam. Nothing better than a boiled egg (brain food) and toast!!!

My DS1 is taking his maths a year early - so only two papers this year! I do think that the schools have the revision drill down to a fine art these days - for the Greek GCSE - to be taken in May 2009! - they had covered all the necessary language and vocab by Easter 2008 - amazing:eek:

I started a thread on families earlier, last month I think. I'm stressed out to hell still. DS is out with his friends, not a care in the world.
One good thing is, even though he left school on Friday, he has been (invited) back tomorrow to do some maths revision.
I can't wait until end of June for it all to be over.
It's 5 years until DS2 takes his I might have just recovered by then.

I work as an Exam Invigilator, from a number of years of experience of that plus my own two going through the exams, I think parents worry way more than their DD's and DS's, I know I did :)
If anyone wants to ask me anything, I will do my best to try and answer any exam queries.
GCSE bitesize is brilliant, especially for those who find it hard to concentrate for too long. Far better to do a half hour stint, take 10 minutes out and then another half hour etc than to sit solidly revising.
The Revision Guides for the various subjects are also very helpful, even now with a short time to go. You can find them cheaply in charity shops or car boots.

He is not revising in blocks of 30 mins as it takes him that long to get organised. He is going though old papers and then (hopefully) revising the bits he is getting wrong.

Nice to know there is another Invigilator on PTS :)
I agree the A Level students are great, probably because they are in school because they want to be.
I found the students were brilliant when they realised who I was (DS's Mum!) and were very well behaved ;) I am sure you will find the same.
DS cringes at times when he knows I am invigilating or doing other work for school and has a habit of diving out of the car at speed when we park up, lol.
I don't invigilate any of DS's exams as he has rest breaks so is in a separate room with others who have the same.

I invigilated for a Spanish GCSE yesterday (I did Spanish at school years ago and was pretty pleased that I could understand most of it now :D).
You would be surprised what we see as Invigilators for these exams, kids sometimes strolling in late (they can still sit the exam if they arrive within the first hour, usually). Then some are noisy/rude etc., or ask loudly to leave early because they have finished (and the school I work for has a very good reputation). BTW I must say most of the students are great!
Yesterday's exam was made up of 2 papers and ran from 2 until 4pm, which the students had all been told well in advance. Girl puts her hand up and says she has to leave at 3pm to go & collect her younger sister from school, as usual!
Well, she couldn't leave early as the first 50 minute exam was a tape, played slowly with pauses for each question, so she would have had about 10 minutes for the second exam (she had lived in Spain & was very very quick but it would be very unfair on her).
I had to send a message to the Exam Office who then had to phone the family & explain that they should have made arrangements for their younger daughter to be picked up - which they then did. Poor girl though, she was quite stressed and kept turning to look at me when I was waiting for the response to come back from the Office.
I expect she did fine and she finished the second exam in 20 mins anyway - but how stressful for her!

He is away most of the weekend, he's a cub scout young leader and his cubs have a camp this weekend so is taking a bit of revison with him. Actually hoping that one of the scout leaders might be there because he is actually a maths teacher, reaches high school kids, so when they have spare 5 minites he will be doing extra revision with him - how cool is that, individual tuition :D

What did he think of PE?
First thing he did when he got home was to put all of his PE writtne stuff, revision stuff in the recycling bin , saying 5 years of PE just for one mornings exam - quite right. Seems a huge ammount of work for so little at the end.
He is doing adventure sports in September so a C grade would be good but its not a certainty.

There are three English exam boards used at our school - OCR, Edexcel and AQA, there is a Welsh Board WJEC too.
The school I invigilate at is in England, but the students use WJEC Welsh Exam Board for their English exams.

If they have recycled all their PE paperwork what will they do if they want a better grade of fail and need to resit. I told my son to hold onto it just in case
My son is a bit of a struggler, the only way he would get better grades would be if he had three years to do GCSEs instead of two.
We are hanging onto the maths coursework etc because the eldest one will need this to revise before he does his entrance tests and also the youngest will have to revise his maths if he also goes into the RAF when he finishes college.

My youngest struggles, it is hard enough getting her to revise end of year exams, goodness knows what she will be like for GCSE's
I've given DS a day off today on the understanding he gets his head down tomorrow
I think part of the problem is that my three are just two years apart so as one has finished GCSEs another starts so we have actually been in the midst of GCSE run up for six years - actually longer because their school starts the GCSEs in the final six weeks of the previous summer term.
For instance we have been doing Mice and Men for six years, over and over and over and over - I so sick of Steinbeck now - any coursework to do with Mice and Men will probally be ritually shredded and then set fire too after the final English

Lol, know how you must feel.....DS2 took great pleasure in disposing of his GCSE Buisiness Studies coursework project on Subway stores.
The very mention of Subway in our house was enough to drive me nuts as all the BS teacher banged on about was Subway, Subway and even more Subway :nono: It is still affecting me and I haven't ever been in a Subway and have no desire to!

Curley reminds me of a mate of mine LOL
I even managed an A in English
The only decent grader I got but that could have been cause I used to skive off Monday mornings after lunch break
Fancy the silly PE teacher giving me back my note from Mum. That note lasted me months. Ouch my poor ancle I can feel it now
So this week he has had a maths paper yesterday and today is English lit and poetry and this afternooon its IT so its a very tough week.
He says the Maths was very easy yesterday which has worried me sick.
Hes taken his exam copy but left his three old copies of Mice and Men on the desk and wants me to ebay them :D
The stress of it all, the constant revision and testing he seems to cope with well but its brought me out in spots!

My son has already had his prom and we hired a suit for him from Greenwoods (not sure if thats a yorkshire firm) it cost roughly £90 to hire and included everything he needed including shoes and cufflinks :)

I will wait until he gets up to see what his hand looks like before I ring the school to try and sort out a writer for him.

My DS said English was not too bad, but he messed up the question about the poem, did'nt leave enough time and did'nt understand it.
I'm going to look in Tesco for a suit (where else), and its 20% off week! Failing that it will be Next or River Island.
Even though we've offered to give everyone a lift (7 seater) His friends want to hire a stretch limo to get them there as well. I think I'll need a bank loan by the time the weekend is finished.

If in doubt, do ring the school now and ask for a scribe (writer) for this afternoon. They don't mind as long as they know in advance, and if he wants to start writing it himself at first, with the scribe just sat next to him ready in case he needs her, that's fine too. Make it clear that you do think one may well be needed - even just to finish the writing for him if his hand starts to ache too much. Mention the hospital visit too.
I have invigilated exmas in this situation before and IMHO the Exam Office at your DS's school would rather arrange a scribe who then doesn't actually do much writing, than find out too late that he has had a problem with his hand aching, and can't finish his exam.

I hope your DS gets on OK with his exam today and you manage to sort a scribe for him.
I agree with Coupon-madder and have also sat as an invigilator for a student who has a scribe.
One of my fellow invigilators is in a similar situation, her DS managed to break a bone in his wrist just two days before he started his GCSE's. Typically, the break was to his writing hand!
He has had a scribe and yesterday was going to try using a laptop, not been in today (due to dental appt) so don't know how he got on.
I was gutted not to have invigilated the English Lit Mice and Men paper yesterday :(
I was running AS Level PE units and DT Product Design which were pretty boring by the looks of them, but I love English :)

Great that your issue was quickly solved, I hope you will sleep better tonight and your DS will be fine with his exams :)
Our school has wonderful TA's (teaching assistants) some of whom are trained to scribe and they sit with all the students who have special needs in separate rooms. This can vary from those who are granted extra time, rest breaks or have an unexpected injury etc to one who has enlarged exam papers due to a sight impairment.
I would guess most schools are the same, if ever anyone has any issues or concerns, always speak to the school as I have never known any issue (even last minute unexpected ones) to be a problem :)

you would be amazed how many students try to pull the wool to try to get extra time. If a student comes to me with a broken arm and needs a scribe fine it can be arranged almost immediately but one who needs one for a broken leg !!

The younger one is driving me bats :boxing:
He is dead set on getting a summer job despite not being able to do evenings, being away several weekends and three weeks over the summer. So off he went and got an application form from the Co-op yesterday, brought it home, spent hours filling it in and has taken it back this morning. At least he is out of my hair for a while - has anyone else found that the more contact they have with their kids the more their kids turn them into evil nasty bad mothers :D
He is completley and utterly certain the Co-op will give him a job and was in such a good mood last night armed with the application form. I tried to tell him that you can fill in dozens of forms, attend interviews all over the place and still not get anywhere but he refused to listen :(
