Ok , how about flying into LA and having a few days there, driving to Vegas and then flying to San Francisco ( and then home) ?
If we were on our own I think we would have done that but as it is a family holiday we feel we want to spend most of the week together but would like a few nights on our own We may look into flying to SF for 2 nights.

Would be perfect if a reward flight opened up, I have a 241 to use

I flew to SF, stayed a few days, hired an SUV and drove to Yosemite park, stayed a few days, then drove to LV. Was incredible.

Didn't bother with LA on that trip, but went a few years later and liked it but don't regret not including it before.

If you do end up staying at the MGM you can check in for your room at the airport when you arrive rather than at the hotel itself. Handy if you're arriving at peak times to avoid queues.

If you are staying at the MGM get the monorail at the back of your hotel. Take it to the end of the line to visit Stratosphere, it's a 10 minute walk from there but you can't miss it.

The other monorails are free, these should get you around quicker. Things will look close but will take you ages to get there as the casino's are huge!

I'm 99% certain airport check in closed in 2013 when the airport when through lots of changes.

TD have you made any decisions about your Vegas trip? I am looking at going next year too, tho' I can't decide between going in May or September. I am not particularly bothered about Vegas, it will just be a 2 night 'add on' at the beginning or end of my trip. My plan is to pick up a car and do a tour of the canyons and of course Hoover Dam is on my list. Any hints/tips appreciated.
